Default ATI RS480 Athlon 64 board pictured

915G finally gets some competition

By Fuad Abazovic in Wien: Thursday 21 October 2004, 16:36

IT MIGHT BE called Radeon Xpress but we are still unsure about the name of
ATI's first Athlon 64/FX/Opteron chipset.
We know it will come in two versions. The first codenamed RS480 is IGP
(Integrated Graphic Processor) chipset while the second one is RX480.

We managed to get a nice picture of ATI reference RS480 board. It has an
actively cooled north bridge, four memory slots, PCIe 16X, two PCIe 1X, two
PCI slots and one unidentified slot.

We noticed four S-ATA connectors and good old IDE connectors on board
followed by a floppy one.

At the back you get VGA out, S VIDEO, four USBs, Firewire and LAN card as
well as AC 97 sound. The ATI board also uses a Via chip, possibly for sound.
Ironic isn't it?

This chipset should be introduced in the next few weeks.

Here is the picture.:

Looks like 3 * PCIe to me. Now if they would get rid of the PCI slots,
we would be in business :-)

I dont see that happening for at least a good 2 years, just look how long
ISA hung around.

Besides, theres still a ton of devices that wont justify the price increase
to move to PCIe, for example a TV capture card, and for some people a legay
card to provide support for specialist/older devices.
