cannot get into windows or safe mode...

on ibm thinkpad laptop 380 ... and occasionally get: exception oe
0028:c001539a in vxd--- . it has the original windows 98 with fat16.

i recently installed a backpack cd-rw and canon bjc-2100 and then this
started. it shows the windows 98 screen and then goes to the "windows
did not shut down properly" and you must boot into safe mode.

i tried ultimate boot disk but it will not recognize it. i also tried
to install win98se but did not have enough disk space.

i really do not want to have to lose everything as I have tax returns
to finish before April 15th! All my data
is on this computer and I have no way to save or transfer it to other
media.

any ideas?

thank you in adavance,
john

ps. i also ran ibm's tests and everything showed okay.

also tried changing booting order but that did nothing.

is there anyway i can transfer the data onto another computer via usb
cable or?

i really need the tax data and have no idea of how to access or
retrieve it to use.

It's unclear from your description: Can you boot into "safe mode"? (You
don't need a book disk/disc to do that.)

no i only get to the prompts and when i press "safe mode" it starts
over and comes to the same error and to "start in safe mode".

thank you,
john

How did you boot the Win98se installer?

[email protected] April 5th 05 11:39 PM

i think i looked on the cd and used setup.exe.

I would take another stab at trying to build a boot disk. You can start
he

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

If you can boot with a disk that will allow you to see the entirety of
your C: drive, that would be a good start.

How much data do you need to recover? Would it be too much to shuttle
out on floppy disks?

vxd are virtual device drivers. In Win98 these vxd errors often are
caused by loading a vxd device driver before that device is ready to be
started. The CD rom drive comes immediately to mind. Disconnect all
peripherals including the printer and cd-rom. See if then safe mode is
accessible. You might also try booting to BIOS setup and restoring
default settings.
