Gook squad by
Li'l Abner
I don't know how many people I have had come to me that had already been to
Best Buy and their "geek squad". Although I am retired and not officially
in business, I do work on a few computers as a pastime.
Here are a couple of examples that really stand out to me.

HDD tool that quickly marks bad sectors by
Pimpom
Could anyone please point me to a hard disk utility (preferably
free) that does a surface scan and *not* make a valiant effort to
recover data when it encounters a bad sector? The ideal program
would be one that can be set to mark a bad or borderline sector
as "bad" and move on without spending...

Why don't Dell computers have reset keys? by

I hope this is a good forum for this one!
Why don't Dell computers have reset keys?
How do the users live without one? I don't use mine often but when I
need it, I really need it.
The mobo layout provided in the Dell manual doesn't seem to show a
place where a reset switch could be...

CD-DVD problem by
peter
I running windows 7 and have a TSST CDDVDW SN-S083B ATA Device.
Suddenly it won't read blank CD-RW or DVD-RW or DVD+RW, however it
will continue to play standard audio CD. Bit puzzled, if it were a
hardware problem surely it wouldn't read any disks. Any ideas?

JUST OFF THE PRESS - - - - the reason we have Gravity? by

JUST OFF THE PRESS - - - - the reason we have Gravity?
A correct theory of gravity will show us these four (4) things:
1. It will show us why gravity also acts like acceleration (principle
of equvalence).
2. It will show us the actual cause of gravity.
3. It will show us why gravitational mass...

DVD units using a rubber band? by

I've heard that a lot of the newer DVD units are using a rubber band
for spinning the disk rather than gears like the older ones had.
Is this really true?

Asus laptop won't start by

My 3 year old ASUS A7M wide screen laptop won't start.
When pushing the button it appears to start up for 3 sec and then
immeadiately shuts down. Vista is not close to start up. Pushing F-keys
while starting doesn't do anything. The screen stays black without a

Google Groups setting? by
Red
I have a computer that is no longer marking my "read" posts in Google

used to change color from blue to burgundy when read but now they
remain blue.
I'm using -XP & OE.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I've been trying to get this craptastic Compaq Presario 1277 to the

Currently I have Windows 98se installed because it's the only
lightweight operating system that affords any responsiveness. Lubuntu
was a grind, SliTaz would install but not boot, and...
