Performance Comparison: Nvidia Fx 5200 or GeForce 4 Ti 4200
Hi
I recently bought a new Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 because my GeForce 4 Ti 4200's fan was going out. I was looking on the Nvidia website and realized that the GeForce 4 TI 4200 is statistically better than the FX 5200 by a longshot. Is this a misinterpretation by my part because I assumed that the newer FX's would make all TI's obsolete. I also assumed the FX was better because the price on a TI 4200 right now is signifigantly cheaper. If anyone knows which card is better than the other, please reply. Id love to hear what you have to say. And if anyone knows a way to install a RELIABLE heat sink on my Ti 4200 that would be appreciated. (Perhaps how to install a heatsink on the GPU? It doesnt sound like this card can take much more of a faulty fan right now...) I sure hope i didnt spend $80 on a signifigantly slower card... Thanks in advance... |

Here's an article that's a year and a half old, comparing cards (including
the 4200 and the 5200): http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...,922652,00.asp The article is relatively kind to the 5200, but the relationship between the 5200 and the high-end cards in the FX5 series isn't similar to that between a 4200 and a 4600 (or 4800). The 5200 is a budget card, while the 4200 isn't that much slower than a 4600. However, the 5200 is a budget DX9 card, while the 4200 only supports DX8. You can still get third-party coolers that'll fit the 4200: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...110-107&depa=0 ($13US, but with $5 shipping it's not all that cheap). It's cooler looking than stock, but I don't know whether it cools better. The least expensive solution would be to get a replacement fan, if you can find one. HTH. I think that you may have spent $80 dollars on a slower card. There are a number of reliable heat sinks for that card search the web for geforce 4200 video heat sink fan and you will find one. You could also just replace the fan but they are a little harder to find. Instruction on how to remove the old heat sink and install a new one can also be found on the web. You could use a 1U copper heatsink and fan with a few modifications. It's DX9 but it's slow enough that this doesn't matter. Add to that the fact that many TI4200 cards o'c pretty well and it takes a fairly expensive video card to outperform one (relatively speaking of course, you'd have to spend about $120 to get higher raw performance ignoring FSAA & DX9). You can install a heatsink using epoxy, like Arctic Alumina Epoxy, http://www.svcompucycle.com/araltherad.html The heatsink can be just about anything when using epoxy, providing it's not too heavy and doesn't block too many PCI slots. A Pentium 1 heatsink might be ideal if you have one with a low-enough RPM (quiet) fan, or there are 3rd party heatsinks that'll fit a TI4200 but offhand I dont' know what/where to find the best or cheapest ones. If the replacement fan is small and thin like the original you might find it quieter and longer lasting by lubing it with very heavy oil... not just after it makes a lot of noise and is failing but BEFORE then. You might even be able to lube your present failing fan with very very heavy oil, bordering on light grease, and have it work fine again for a long time. |
The FX 5200 is MUCH slower than the Ti4200; no comparison. The 5200 is the
FX ENTRY level card for Nvidia. The 4200 was up the scale of Nvidia cards back then. I'm afraid you wasted your money. -- DaveW "Falcon1209" wrote in message ... I have returned my FX 5200 back to the retailer for $5.50. Claimed I made a
mistake on my order... which I did. I was wondering if any of you guys could suggest a card for me. Im looking to spend no more than $110. $120 if its really necessary. I was looking at this card (http://gameve.com/gve/Store/ProductD...sku=VC-XFX-017) If this is a bad deal please let me know. Im guessing its much better according to the bench marks you guys gave me. (According to Tomshardware.com the bechmarks on the 5700 surpassed the TI 4200 by 10 fps in most benchmarks.) If you guys can find a better deal than this, Id love to hear it. I dont feel like returning another card again... Thanks a lot! "Falcon1209" wrote in message ... Hi I recently bought a new Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 because my GeForce 4 Ti 4200's fan was going out. Well it's significantly faster than the FX5200, but not "$96 worth" faster than the TI4200 you already have, especially since the TI4200, once overclocked, might regain half of that 10 FPS difference. Even so for =$110 it is a reasonable choice... though if it were my choice I'd set the TI4200 and put proceeds towards a faster card or just keep using it. |

Yes, it's a bad deal. That card is an LE and it will be slower than your Ti4200. A full blown 5700 will run you around $165 new. If you guys can find a better deal than this, Id love to hear it. Here is a better deal, this card will be roughly half again faster than your 4200. The retailer doesn't have a great rating but they have great prices: http://tinyurl.com/3qaq9 (this was a really long link) http://www.resellerratings.com/seller6143.html Look for more deals he http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=2236&p=3 These are cards that are faster than your 4200. Most are way out of your budget if you buy new. Don't buy anything with an LE or SE appended to it. Nvidia 5700 Ultra, 5900XT, 5900, 6800 Radeon 9600 Pro, 9600XT, 9700Pro, 9800, 9800Pro I had a Ti4200 and wanted a new card but couldn't really afford a $200 card. I decided to buy a used 5900XT. They can be found for $120-140. Also look for Radeon 9700Pros, they can sometimes be found used for $100-120. -- Mac Cool |
So I guess im gonna buy a TT GF4 HSF... but when i get it installed how do I
overclock it? I dont want to stress my card out too much because it sounds really stressed right now (Just the fan. Can hear it all the way from downstairs... not good for staying up late playing some games.) And youre saying that my Gf4 right now is only worth replacing if i get a card thats +$200? So when would be a good time to replace this card? Thanx "Mac Cool" wrote in message ... Falcon1209: Im looking to spend no more than $110. $120 if its really necessary. So when would be a good time to replace this card? Not necessarily $200, but the "used" FX5900XT would be a large step up, and if you keep an eye out you might even find them in the $150-160 range though currently the going rate for a new one is $170, whether they'll drop in price or the market will sell out at the lowest cost vendors is anyone's guess. Overclocking the GF4 depends on how much, how far you want to push it. There are volt-mods to help increase memory and core but as a start you can just see how far it'll go with default voltage, no hardware modifications. To do that use "coolbits" (google will find it easily) and try upping frequency, shooting for somewhere around 300MHz GPU and 600MHz memory, +-30MHz, and go from there. 64MB cards seem to o'c higher than 128MB, though that might've been earlier in their lifecycle, towards the end they might've been putting better memory on them simply because the state of memory was that DDR was getting faster and even chips spec'd to lower (higher ns speed) might clock higher than their markings suggest. Just be sure that if you're pushing the speed that your heatsink is on good, working properly. |

And youre saying that my Gf4 right now is only worth replacing if i get a card thats +$200? Basically yeah. The Ti4200 cards were great cards and they are still great for older games or games that are not pushing the envelope. If you are willing to buy a used 5900XT, you can get them for around $140; a used 9700 pro for around $120. -- Mac Cool |
