fx 5200 sweet deal but will it work ?

Hi,

My short story/question is:

Is FX5200 AGP 8x backwards compatible with AGP 4x ?

My long story/question is:

I have a Pentium III 450 mhz and 256 mb ram.

Motherboard is asus P3V4X ( AGP 4X ).

The video card was TNT2 32 mb ram.

The problem was that the video card had a cooling fan.

The cooling fan attracted ASSLOADS of DUST !

The cooling fan was making a very annoying sound.

First I blowed many times to blow off the dust.

I reinstalled it the sound got worse...

I decide to run cold water over it to clean away the dust. ( now black paint
stuff leaking from it )

I also tried to open the cooling fan... but one screw was jammed I could not
open it.

Damn, I wanted to re-oil it :(

I let the card dry... I placed it back into my computer after 2 hours of
drying.

I wondered what would happen... it worked but some lines were blinking.

So I knew something was wrong but I didn't care.

I knew the card was probably still wet and would probably die if I started a
heavy gpu intensive application.

So I then started a 3D game to see what would happen it started blinking
even more.

Then during loading of the game the computer crashed/rebooted.

From that point on it seemed the card had died !

The computer made one long beep and three short beeps indicating bad video
card memory or video card not found.

I could not see anything... I could only hold the power button for a few
seconds to reboot the computer...

But holding the power button is dangerous... that's how I fried my last
gigabyte motherboard... stupid power button switches !

Then after accidently rebooting a few times my PC made no sound at all so I
got scared and stopped rebooting... I was scarried my harddisk had die or
would die.

So that was a scary moment...

So I assume it is now dead... I am now using a ET6000 card with a special
made windows xp driver.

But I need the ET6000 for my old pentium... it's an PCI card you know... and
my old p166 needs it it doesn't have agp :)

So I started browsing for a new card... since the TNT2 can no longer play
any new games since it doesn't have T&L.

Also I hate these stupid ****ing fans :)

So I came across this card which seems the perfect deal for me ! =D

The NVidia GeForce FX 5200.

It doesn't have a stupid ****ing fan ! so that means no dust ! no sound ! no
cleaning ! no oiling ! no nothing ! =D

It also has T&L and probably some other new features =D

The best thing is it is cheap as well and will probably even play doom 3
lol... even if it is a 1 fps per second on my PIII I would still like it
lol.

Anyway maybe I can play homeworld 2 with it or so... I think I could... or
maybe something else :)

Anyway... I really do need a new card anyway so the cheapest card will do...
but I don't want a TNT2 replacement like the radeon 7000... because that's
lame... So buying a DirectX 9 card seems best... maybe some games aren't
that slow... :) I see no reason to buy a DX8 card unlesssss...

Anyway.... to make a long story short...

My big doubt is AGP 8x

My computer only supports AGP 4x

Will FX 5200 card still work in my PIII 450 mhz with AGP 4x ?????

( the exact card is: asus v9520 Magic/T )

It even has a video in !!! the 5700 doesn't even have that ?! :(

( Since a family member if mine has a video thingy she cames around once a
year or so and I would like
to record any video stuff or I am even playing on buying a digital photo (?)
camera... that probably works different or maybe
it needs a video in as well.. I dont know... I played around with a video in
once and it s fun and a must have :)
once you used it, you just can't go without it.. just in case ! :) unless it
has some other form of input and a converter plug ;) )

http://www.asus.com/products/vga/v9520m/overview.htm

I am hoping I can buy it for about 90 euro's at a local shop.

It's still quite expensive for just a replacement... my pc is starting to
die... after 6 years of use :)

I will soon buy a new pc... as soon as doom III is out :)

But I still want my old pc to work.

In case AGP 8x is not compatible with AGP 4x..

The next cheapest card I can buy as

Sapphire Radeon 7000 agp 4x or pci... for 40 euro's or so.

I haven't really checked it out yet.

The FX 5200 seems the perfect card for me ! =DDDD

Also I like asus :)

Though I don't like Via chipsets anymore =D

So please enlighten me about this :P =D

I can also ask the salesman if nobody knows... but I first try this
newsgroup ;)

Yes. You won't suffer any noticeable difference from only having an AGP4x
motherboard.

Umm, you're joking, right?
You'll plug in a WET video card and figure it'll only be a problem if used
in a "heavy gpu intensive application"?

I don't mean to be offensive, rather helpful when I suggest that you are
your PC's worst enemy and ought to take it to a shop from now on.

So I then started a 3D game to see what would happen it started blinking
even more.

Did it not occur to turn off the pc and let video card dry?

Then during loading of the game the computer crashed/rebooted.

Umm, generally speaking there is NEVER a reason to hold a power switch
down for more than 4 seconds, no matter what... and a board will not die
after 4 seconds of it.

Then after accidently rebooting a few times my PC made no sound at all so I
got scared and stopped rebooting... I was scarried my harddisk had die or

They're really not a big deal, you just need a better screwdriver to get
the screws out. Personally I lube 'em when new, never letting the bearing
get so dried out that the fan starts making noise.

yeah, your pc is pretty limited by the CPU, even an FX5200 is going to be
cripplied by the rest of the system, and because of that you might find it
a better value to buy an (even cheaper) card than the FX5200. Even an old
TNT2 is severely bottlenecked by your CPU, the main issue would be 2d
display quality and if it has enough memory for your preferred monitor
resolution.

Anyway maybe I can play homeworld 2 with it or so... I think I could... or
maybe something else :)

Forget about "lame" and Direct X versions, your system is so slow there's
no point in worrying about it. If you really intend to play games then
perhaps a DX8 card will be slightly better but beyond that it's pointless
to consider what DX9 would do for your system.

Anyway.... to make a long story short...

Generally a modern digital camera will use USB or the flash memory card
is removed and read with a memory reader (also usually attached via USB
interface). VIdeo-in on a video card is more useful for capturing from an
analog source like a vcr or older camcorder.

Frankly I"d spend as little as possible on video card and upgrade the CPU,
assuming the motherboard will take a P3 up to 1.1GHz or possibly even a
Tualatin up to 1.4GHz with the right slotket adapter.

In case AGP 8x is not compatible with AGP 4x..

Makes no difference in your situation, actually your Via chipset is the
fastest and fullest featured chipset made that could run a P450... you are
fortunate to even have AGP4X support.

So please enlighten me about this :P =D

Frankly, considering your desire to upgrade later anyway, you ought to
just spend the $ on the beginnings of a new system. You might get a
motherboard with integrated video and low-end CPU, memory, and go from
there, upgrading it a little at a time. Something like an Athlon XP2200
on an nForce2 motherboard with integrated video would be at least 4X as
fast at gaming as your present system would be with the fastest video card
on earth installed. If you really need a different video card for that
box just buy the cheapest thing on ebay, possibly something along the
lines of a Geforce2 MX for $15 USD.

Why you want such a low end card, most gforce4 cards are more
powerfull ?

first and install it wet as you're replacing a washed card.

He should rub it down thoroughly with a steel wool soap pad, such
as SOS or Brillo. Then oven dry at 450 degrees F. for 90 minutes.

Also I like asus :)

Though I don't like Via chipsets anymore =D

Makes no difference in your situation, actually your Via chipset is the
fastest and fullest featured chipset made that could run a P450... you are
fortunate to even have AGP4X support.

Yes I know that... it's a very fast system. BUT I don't like it because my
creative sb live don't work with it.

And the sound crackles... I think this is a known problem with this via
chipset.

Skybuck Flying May 11th 04 04:06 AM

Well all you smart assess...

If I didn't wash it it would have died anyway... because of overheat or I
would start hitting it...

Anyway now it's just working fine so I am lucky.

The dust was like 1 centimeter thick ok !

Just wait until your super super super duper truper dustsucker is like that.

You have two options:

1. Clean it as good as you can and maybe even oil it... - costs almost
nothing.

2. Or buy a new 400 dollar card.

Take your pick :)

By the way... the should apply a special coating so that it doesn't short
circuit !

It's as simple as that.

Ok, and I also said I let it dry for a 2 or 3 hours ok !

Apperently that was not long enough.

I am just lucky lucky lucky.

And thx to nvidia for making such a great card =D

I will definetly make sure my next card is an nividia card =D

Better safe than sorry, set the oven for "clean".

Why you want such a low end card, most gforce4 cards are more
powerfull ?

How much does a gforce 4 cost ?

There are so many cards... I dont know them all...

Some talk about nv30,31 etc.. some talk about fx 5200, 57000 and now you
talk about geforce 1,2,3,4...

See the confusion ?

Besides it's an old system... a new card would be overkill ;)

And also... a fanless card seems really handy... less noise means higher
concentration and more relaxing :) and as I mentioned no dusts problems
etc... no hitting the computer etc etc lol.

The high end cards have super dust suckers, that s the problem.

Also the high end cards have very very big dust suckers and take a 2 slot
space ouch !

I want my pc's to last you know ;)

Also I wonder if E3 2004 will have some details about doom3 or even a
demo... :)

I also wonder if it's possible to build a almost or even totally fanless
system that can still play doom3 at 640x480x32 bit colors.

That's good enough or maybe 800x600x32 if the font requires it.

I never play at higher resolutions than that for shooters anyway... except
for real time strategy games or so... but those dont require high fps :)

I also dont need advanced stuff like anti aliasing or FAA whatever that is..
or over sampling... I even put off the vertex lighting in rtcw so I can see
better.

So my next 3D card should be able to run Doom III at 800x600x32 bit colors
at at least a frame rate of 30 fps... I believe doom3 requires 60 fps so
that might be a problem.

I dont need anti ailiasing or FAA or any other technique that slows down the
game with a factor of more than 2.5 or so.

For example for a shooter: tri-linear filtering... I dont really need it.
over sampling I dont really need it... high resolution I dont really need
it.

Most shooters are fast paced... so most of the time you dont even really
look at stuff but sometimes you do just to enjoy it :)

I just need the basic stuff like Transform and Lightning... otherwise the
textures dont display at all, I just see what. I want the lighting to look
decent and for doom III ofcourse the shadows and texture should look good as
well so that means bump mapping and maybe those pixel shaders ;)
And maybe also mipmapping and eum ansi trophic filtering... however that's
not really required if it's to much of a performance hit.

See most important thing is: T&L, Pixel Shaders, Shadows stuff, Texture
support ;), Bump mapping whatever, mipmapping.

That's must important.

I think a card like FX5200 can do those just fine :) except maybe the shadow
stuff...

The newer FX5700 seems to do it even a bit better ?! :) but doesn't have
video in and is more expensive and a dust sucker :)

Skybuck.

As far as I know, the best fanless card is the MSI FX 5500 128MB:
http://snipurl.com/6avv . However, an FX 5500 would be overkill for a
P3-450Mhz, so you would need to put something like that with a faster CPU.
Anyway, I expect the minimum requirements for Doom3 and Half-Life 2 would be
somewhere between 600Mhz and 1.2Ghz when they eventually come out.

According to the Asus website, the P3V4X can take a P3-1.0 Ghz or a P3-1.0B
Ghz with a BIOS update to 1006.003: http://snipurl.com/60r3 . I'm not sure
if those clock-speeds are from 10x100 or 7.5x133, so you'd need to look into
the processor spec a bit more. The problem is that, for the price that a
1.0Ghz P3 goes for on eBay, you could buy an AMD 2500+ and motherboard combo
(!?).

Should accept a Tualatin Celeron (1.3GHz @ Pricewatch = $36 delivered)
with one of these adapters;

You can run any AGP card in your system. I just put an Nvidia 5900XT into
a similar box, PIII 500MHz AGP2X, it works fine. (BTW I'm planning to
build a new AthlonFX system next month when the 939 pin CPUs and
motherboards come out, the 5900XT is pointless in this system but I wanted
to get one before the channel dried up). For your system you should buy
something in the $79 price range, that would probably be a GeForce 4 with
64M. The 5200 is probably in that price range and it would be fine also.

Not long enough at all. At least 24 hrs in the hot-water cupboard is the
standard for this type of hardware abuse.

nVidia make excellent GPUs, they don't make many cards.

I will definetly make sure my next card is an nividia card =D

Wise move. Oh, and, just open the case every few months and check for dust.
Also, don't keep your PC on the floor where there is most dust and try to
afford the rent for something better than a packed-earth-floored shed to
live in.

Nah man. When are you going to get it? You need to vacuum your place once in
a while, keep it relatively clean and dust-free, and don't keep the PC on
the floor. They're only dust suckers if the environment is full of dust,
otherwise they're air suckers.

You may be getting confused when certain websites/publications described the
*sound* of some of the nVidia reference cards as dustbusters. It doesn't
mean you can substitute them for your household vacuum cleaner, you still
need to use that now and again.

Hmm that's a good tip.

I DO PLACE MY PC ON THE GROUND !

But it's a HIGH TOWER.

The PC Tower gets full with dust.

I have a wooden table. I think if I put the PC on the table it might start
to resonate.

Besides from that it takes a lot of space on the table !

I rather not waste that space !

The fans just make it worse they gather stuff up.

If it wasn't for the heat these towers could be air sealed preventing any
dust form getting in.

I rather have a sealed pc which transports heat via heatsinks on the side of
the tower casing or something.

:)

Doesn't matter, most PCs suck air in the bottom of the case, right near the
floor.

The PC Tower gets full with dust.

That's why I *never* put a PC on the floor.

I have a wooden table. I think if I put the PC on the table it might
start to resonate.

Shouldn't.

Besides from that it takes a lot of space on the table !

It's not wasted if it's saving your hardware.

The fans just make it worse they gather stuff up.

They suck air for cooling, if that air comes from a dusty place then they
suck dust too.

How much money you got? What you propose isn't really feasible and would
invlove the use of heatpipes, probably custom-made. (You can't just cool the
outside of the case). The new BTX standard should help in this regard. At
the very least vacuum the area around your PC regularly, moving it if
needed. Even lifting it off the gound a few inches by putting it on
something (Books? A low wooden shelf?) is better than sitting on the floor,
especially carpet.

Most of all, regularly open and dust the inside of your machine. (A
paintbrush is good for that, *I* don't recommend using a household vacuum
cleaner inside a PC, ther is a risk of static discharge frying your
components) I do this (paintbrush and blow) every few months anyway, even
though my PC is on the desk next to the monitor. Usually drops my temps a
few degrees.

ROFL...

oh man this is best thread ive read in a while :D

Skybuck Flying wrote:
