FWIW 8500go 256 OC

Yea for what it is worth the 8500gt OC is not a bad card for the money. I
just put one in a
core2duo 2.4 allendale with 2 gig of ram and Vista Ultimate and it runs
pretty good.
I have been using an old P4 3.2 with 7600gt and believe it or not the 8500
and dual core runs rings around it.
Overclocking the card is so simple as MSI includes the utility with it. The
card runs great with
stock drivers that comes with it. I am satisfied for now 55.00 dollars after
rebate but
down the road I think I will upgrade to an 8800 or 9800 series. I have
tested a few games on
the system Halo, Halo2, Fear, Quake4 and Doom3 and they are all playable.
Fear runs at mostly
medium setting but the other run at medium and high. It also run good on my
56 inch HDTV
monitor at 1024x768 that is the limit using d-sub connector. Haven't tried
HDMI using a converter yet.
Purchased the card at Newegg and it has a 20 dollar rebate. I hate rebates.

No, it's not. A 7600GT will run circles around it. By a large margin. Your
analysis leaves out one very important factor. You're attributing the gaming
performance increase to the video card. It's 100% due to the processor and
m/b upgrade. And here's another fact: If you were to stick that 7600GT back
in your new system with the E4600 you'd find that your gaming performance
would be up a huge amount over what it is now. (Try it, assuming it wasn't
an AGP card) The 7600GT is faster than even a 8600GT running DX9 games and
benches. An 8500GT card, even the OC versions, is poor choice when you can
do far better for the same money. I assume yours is the MSI 256Mb OC one. A
far more accurate statement would be that the new E4600 Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz
2Mb and motherboard/DDR2 combo is vastly more powerful and efficient than
your old Pentium 4D 3.2 unit.
This 8600GT 512Mb card, still inadequate as a DX10 card, is far faster than
your 8500GT, is $59.99 after $25 MIR and is an actual HDCP card, which your
MSI 8500GT is not capable of doing.

Well Augustus I have to disagree with you, before I ran the 2.4 I had a 1.6
celeron 420 conroe-l in the system
and it ran the same games, not as well of course but they did run. I am
going to load up crysis next week
then I will see if it is any good. Crysis barely runs on my 7600gt, P4
system.

I do have the card OC'ed to 650 and 1300 and I think I can go higher but I
may have to
pack it in ice, LOL. Down the road I will probably install an 8800 series
card. I am in no hurry.

One other thing I forgot this card had the GDDR3 not the 2 which was tested
at tom hardware.

You can disagree all you want, BigJim, but you are not comparing apples to
apples. Any meaningful comparison must be between two different cards on the
same hardware with the same OS. Your old P4D 3.2 setup is/was a very
ineffecient design. I don't doubt it ran Crysis badly on a 7600GT. All I'm
saying is that Cysis on that same 7600GT would run one hell of a lot better
in that E4600 dual core setup. It's still not desirable for this type of
gaming. It's acceptable for older DX9 titles at moderate resolutions. I
don't know what the games running badly on a $40 single core Celeron unit
has to do with it. Your 8500GT OC is still not as good as a vanilla 8600GT,
and that's not a Crysis card in any sense of the word either. A new DX10
card that requires you run a game like F.E.A.R. at medium settings is a
crappy performer.

You think the 8500GT was responsible for your performance gains and you
are also looking forward to running Crysis on it? I admire your
consistency. :/

not so much as looking forward running crysis but games have always
given me a basics for what a computer can do. Games brutalize computers,
they push the heat up and push the cpu and memory. That is the one of the
reasons
I run them and they can be fun and entertaining also.

I could have put an 8800gtx in the system but that would have been no fun.
We all know how it runs games, the thing that interests me is the actual
hands on
approach how far can I push it. I have push a few until they have broken.
