Default quick 8800 question

I'm looking at Tom's Hardware 2007 VGA charts and it's saying that a
8800GTS, 500MHz, 1600MHz 320 MB GDDR3 card gives a higher frame rate than a
8800GTS, 500MHz, 1600MHz 640 MB GDDR3. This seems strange to me... shouldn't
the 640 MHz card give a higher frame rate?

Once you have enough system/video memory to accomplish the task at hand,
any more is wasted. Even counter-productive depending on how memory
management is executed.

Where do you see 640 MHz in what you typed above?

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html

the 640 is just under the 320

And what's behind the 640 or 320?

Regards,

Patrick.

the 640... :-) I would thingk that it would be faster than the 320, but
according to that chart it's slower... not by much.. but slower

It's not '640 MHz' but '640 MB'. Not the speed, but the amount of memory is
different. And more memory doesn't necessarily make a card faster...

As a guess I'd say that the increased ram causes the card ram timings
to be a shade lower. The 640 runs at the same MHZ but has slightly
higher latency.
