Fastest AMD 939 X2 or FX processor?
I see a few on ebay but wondering what max speed was. Presently using
AMD 939 X2 +4200 and assume I'll have to upgrade my motherboard and processor to obtain much more speed. TIA RT |

TIA RT The 4200+ was 2.2GHz with 1/2M caches. I think the fastest the 939 got to was 2.6GHz and 1M caches. I wouldn't bother upgrading that processor, you'll hardly notice the difference. If you want a significant speed boost you would have to get a Core2 which means a new motherboard, new memory and a new processor. |

FX60 (X2) was 2.6 GHz; FX57 (single core) was 2.8 GHz. Socket AM2 will get you to 3 GHz (6000+) or 2.8 GHz (FX62). Socket F currently has FX74 at 3 GHz. So, you can upgrade to 2.6 GHz for the price of the CPU, but will have to go for a new MoBo and possibly RAM if you want faster. If you're going to spend the big bux and do it today, Intel Core2Duo will likely yield better performance. Depending on your usage, the cheap upgrade to FX57 or FX60 should hold you over until the next AMD "breakthrough"... |

Forget upgrading the 939. If you want faster on it, just overclock what you have now. You can get faster AM2 with MB for less. If money isn't a problem, then the C2D would get you the fastest, but you'll pay a premium for it. http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html If you go socket 775, inspect it before leaving the store with a large mag glass. If it has bent pins, no one will take it back for any reason once you leave with it. Search 775 bent pins for details. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |
