New Card for FSX
I have a PNY 9800GT 1024. Is this a good card for FSX?
I still have difficulty with frame rates and the game locking up. I upgraded from a 6800 OEM. Thanks |

Thanks Your new card is simply an 8800GT with 1024Mb of DDR3 and a 55nm G92 instead of the usual 65nm G92....same memory speeds, shader clocks and core speed. In short, exact same performance but likely more o/c potential due to lower themal envelope of the die shrink. Doubling the DDR3 to 1024Mb has no effect on gaming speed, but will allow for large textures at high resolutions with demanding games. What are the system details for the box you are running FSX on? Processor, RAM, etc. |

* K2NNJ:
Dell XPS 400 4GB DDR2 667MHz Pent. D 930 Dual Core 3GHz The old Pentium D is not a good match for a 9800GT, it's slow by todays standards and probably the reason why your frame rates aren't as good as you expect them to be. BTW: please don't top post. Benjamin |

If you have, at least, the FSX SP1 update installed, it will utilize both cores of your CPU. The main thing is that the CPU and GPU are matched. For a Core 2 CPU an 8800, or 9800 is a goot match, and for a Core i7, a GTX 260, or 280 would be a good match. |

New Card for FSX
"K2NNJ" wrote in message ... Dell XPS 400 4GB DDR2 667MHz Pent. D 930 Dual Core 3GHz The major problem is that Pentium D processor. Even the low end C2D processors running at a much lower speed will outperform it. Right now, the folks having the best performance in FSX are running the new i7 processors and a minimum of an 8800 series video card. While FSX is very CPU intensive, it also needs a lot of video processing power. The 9800 might help a small amount, but until you upgrade your processor it will always be the bottleneck. Ed |
