I have an old P-II 200........

Did Intel make a P-II 200? I must have missed that one.

But yeah, as YoKenny said, Kerio and AVG is a good combo.

Why is Grisoft AVG free? Does that mean it's not as good as the ones we

pay
for (Norton, McAfee, Panda, etc)? What are the disadvantages of this free
AVG?

Because they're nice people and want to do something for their fellow man?
The mainly do corporate anti-virus stuff, that's how they make their money.
It's in their (and their client's) best interests to minimise the spread of
virus' so they produce a product that is free for non-commercial use. This
helps to stop virus' spreading.

I find it is as good, if not better than, some commercial products. They
update the reference files regularly, the program has a very small footprint
(doesn't use much RAM, HDD or CPU) and is easy to use.

I have used it to the exclusion of all other programs in the last few years
and haven't contracted a virus.

No disadvantages that I can see.

computer only has 32 mB memory, but it has a 5 GB hard drive. The
operating system on it is Win 98.

I tried a recent version of Norton Internet Securtity (2003). The
processor was 100% busy, all the time and the hard drive was always
grinding away. I un-installed NIS and that problem went away.

Any suggestions for good, current Firewall Software & Anti-Virus
Software that is old computer friendly?

As a firewall/gateway for a network? Mandrake 8.2.

I thought of using linux, and haven't yet ruled it out. I have
down-loaded a copy of debian linux and may try it some time.

My thought was to stick with a known OS for now. At least there is
lots of software available for windows.

I noticed a posting about you not ruling out the linux kernel for a
firewall type application in your network. Since you don't know alot
about it, perhaps now would be a good chance to figure out how to use it.
Go for it. Might as well tinker with that P2 machine.

One of the many Linux micro-distros, pre-configured to be a firewwall,
seem perfect for that system. They're not too hard to set up,
primarily you'd need the NIC driver.
