Default Booting from a USB key drive or memory-based storage?

I'm looking for an alternative to booting a pc from a hard drive. I'm
most interested in a way to bring the computer up much faster. It
should involve something plugged into PCI, IDE, or USB but not a
removable media drive like a CD drive.

Does anyone know which motherboards give you an option to boot from an
alternative device?

Any experience or recommendations booting from this type of device?
