Default 9700PRO AIW & MMC Installation Problems

Hi folks, as the title suggests, problems getting MMC to install.
Guess I did not have enough Black Roosters, Bat Blood & Eye of Newt on hand.

The Box is a Asus PC-DL (Dual Xeon v1.04), CPU 2.4GHz 133FSB, Audio is
the onboard (Analog Devices AD1985)SoundMax software and 2GB RAM running
at 166Mhz. VideoCard is a 9700PRO
I am installing on WinXP SP2, DirectX 9.0c. I install the ATI Cat driver
5.13 with WDM & the ATI control panel, the UCI/DAO from MMC 9.08 and
then install MMC 9.08. After installing all this I get a black screen on
the video (after running the intialization)input (either S or Composite)
but I can hear the audio fine.
The kicker is that it worked initially but after turning the PC off
overnight I get the above symptoms. I uninstalled & reinstalled, same
symptoms. I went back to a disk image taken immediately before the
attempt at the ATI install, same symptoms.
I tested the purple breakout cable on my other PC running MMC
(ironically also a PC-DL w/2.66 processors & Audigy 2 sound) using a ATI
8500/128 videocard. Cable worked flawlessly as does MMC 9.08 on that
install. Bad video in suddenly ? Any other possible causes ?
Another thing odd about the install was the audio selection. There was
no dialog box to set the audio input. Do AIW's have a conflict with the
SoundMAX. I am no fan of onboard sound, but I am getting tired of buying
partially broken PC gear also. I have a old hercules GameTheaterXP card.
Maybe I will try that (though it seems partially broken also).

Also, how in the world is TVonDemand turned off in MMC 9.08. I know I
have done it in my previous install but for the life of me I can not
find it.

If anyone has any input I sure woud appreciate it. Thanks !

Congrats on a fairly complete first post.

First the easy ones. Audio has been digital since ~5.3. Change was in the
WDM drivers between MMC updates. Audio cables from AIW to sound card aren't
used. Try adjusting sound level with the wave slider. Takes a registry
hack to turn off TVoD with the Unified driver. Google for it if you want to
go that way.

Your using MMC and WDM drivers from different sides of a big change. Cat5.13
was the first WDM drivers to go with MMC9.1x which only added "features'
most AIW only users didn't want.(constant TVoD and inability to pause
capture being the biggies)

If you want to stick with 5.13 you could try doing a manual cleaning &
install but don't install the parental encoder. No guarantee. Make sure all
the WDM drivers are installed per WDM release notes and working. Run DXdaig
and check for problems.

Yes you are right about the change I believe. That was the year there
were 13 driver releases. Thing is cat 5.13 driver/wdm & mmc 9.08 work
great with the same board and a ancient 8500.

Better option would probably be to use Cat 5.11(probably 5.12 but not sure)
or slightly older. I use Cat5.11 and MMC9.06. Always do a manual cleaning &
install when going back in version. Instructions for manual cleaning are at
ati.com/install. 9.08 has a problem with Guide+, if that is important.

Are you getting video from the tuner or not using it?

Unfortunately the tivo that I am inputing from does not have a Co-Axial
out. That might work and I am considering swapping the 9700 with the 8500.

Are you only using one monitor?

yes, 32" LCD TV

Don't recall any details but seems like some may have had problems with dual
CPU or hyperthreading. Assume you have that under control though.

Yes no problem with the dual CPU's

I can only conclude that the Video-In on the card has been broken some
how. The display is a 32" LCD TV at 1280x1024. Hate to think that the TV
fried the Video-In.
I have spent 3 hours trying various combinations of drivers & mmc only
to end up with audio & a black screen.

What would anyone's suggestion be for a different Video-In/Capture
solution ? If a video card solution then I am limited to a AGP card.
Otherwise PCI, USB or Firewire.

Thanks
