Default Massive Catastrophy after BIOS upgrade to FJ

Here I was quite happy running FH but I read in this NG good things about
FJ. So why not upgrade the BIOS, have done it since FE for GA-8KNXP Rev 2.0
board. If I only would have known than what I experienced for the past 8
hours.

I followed directions and had no problem updating the BIOS everything went
like clock work. My disk configuration is (you know what is coming next) 2
Baraccudas in Raid 0 using the Intel SATA drivers for system, I took the
recommendations from this NG to disable the other SATA drivers. Had one
additional ATA 160 Gig drive connected for Data.

After updating the BIOS the system starts normal but what the hell my drive
D its GONE. Where is my Data drive? Disk Manager tells me it is a Dynamic
Drive that is offline. What the hell this was a Basic drive how come it is
a dynamic one now, I tried for 4 hours to get this drive online but to no
avail. Googled and found that others have had this problem and what they
did to get their data back. My hat off to the lads from R-Studio it saved
the day.

Installed a new drive started R-Studio to recover the files from the Off-
Line disk and got back 99.5 % :-) That was 50$ well spend on an excellent
utility.

The Good side is I have now 200 Gig of extra space because the old drive is
being converted back to Basic and reformatted as I am writing this.

Any idea what caused this and will I update my BIOS to F???. No way Jose.

Hello,
This once again proves the point, if it ain't broke, fon't fix it!!
If FH was running fine, what was there to gain for you by going to FJ.
As a rule, you should only 'udpate' the Bios if it will definitely solve an
existing problem, and not just because you want to be 'up to date'. If
you're running fine with the existing Bios, leave it alone!
I am still running Bios F8 (GA-8KNXP, ver 1). Machine is runninf fine, so
why change to F12?

Good luck

I did have a difficulty that I hoped the BIOS would solve even though now
that I have taken the machine apart I realized it was not the BIOS.

I have one of those 7 in 1 floppy drives that also carries slots for camera
memory and they disappeared. But rather than the BIOS it was the USB
connector to the Motherboard that had gotten loose.

Otherwise yes I agree don't fix it if it ain't broke. Wonder what XP SP2
will have in store for us.

Evenin,

If Gigabyte would publish a detailed & real reason for the Updates
it would help. I've a rev. 2 board & FJ fixed one problem & made another
quite a bit better & everything seems to be tighter (how's that for ambiguous).

A detailed list of fixes and enhancements would give You the option
of updating or not. I tend to watch the groups for awhile. I did NOT install
FI. These releases usually change more than one thing & there are often sections
that have been recoded more efficiently so there is an argument for staying
"Up to date".

BUT... "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!" is definitely far safer.
I was running a GA-6BXC & 400 mHz PII up until I started to mess with video
and was perfectly satisfied!

Don't let the ******* get Ya down!

Most people here do not know how to flash a Bios, you must Use the Factory
Defaults after Flashing, Then boot again and set your own defaults.

This is a MUST..

Ohh too right!

I'm running a GA8-KNXP rev1 and I'm still using an F6 pre-release! I
only bios flashed to get my corsair memory supported at speed, and
that's as far as I went... Then again, I'm not using the Sata at the
moment, and the raid ports are just being used as regular IDE.

Well, Karen - I ask you nicely to PLEASE do not give it up - I am no
fool, but I am unknowledgeable about many aspects of Windows computers
and there assorted bits - I know lots more about Macs having used them
for 15 years or so, bu they of course don't have all these sorts of problems.

I am thinking about updating the BIOS on my 81G1000 board, but of course
had no idea about needing to use the factory settings as you pointed out
- I would have thought you just flash and restart - I am used to things
being done the easy way (Mac users are spoiled) and would definatly have
fallen into that trap had you not posted.

So, thanks kindly - your post is much appreciated by me, and I think
many other Windows newbies/uninformed

David

No I will not when I see so many fools here plus the 40 odd years I have
worked with with computers..

No custom settings unless you regard custom settings to set the drive
detection to auto and disable the SATA connections that are unused. My
settings were plain vanilla no advanced changes. Printed out Giga Bytes
instructions and followed them to the T. As I said before done this with 5
previous BIOS upgrades on the same machine with no hardware changes. Allow
some room for errors on the manufacturer's side.

There is a very simple reason, you Bios is in Cmos Ram, this is the ram
that
holds you settings, but when you updates your bios you update the EEprom
only,
your Cmos ram still has the old settings, Also you new Bios moves things
around and add some new features, so that is why you most update to the
factory defaults First..

Gigabyte sent me a new Bios for my mobo and that was one thing they
emphasised, mind you so do all other mobo makes, you must set the Factory
defaults First, after flashing, then reboot, then set you own custom
defaults..

You didn't say that before, what you said was you flash first, reboot and
then set factory defaults, Google can prove same.

I countered and said exactly what you've stated above, and you told me i was
wrong....ha!

In my case with my New Bios, after setting the Factory defaults, the boot
option did not list the names of the boot devices, (only the total number
of
them) it has to boot again to find them..
