E6700 Overclocking
I'm about to build my new computer on Monday, with an E6700 CPU.
Now, this is going to be my first OC so I'd like some help with it. I've read about the CPU and it seems that the only way to OC it is by raising the FSB(correct me if I'm wrong). I bought an extra heatsink because I don't want to OC too much(only to around 3.0 GHZ or 3.2 maybe) Any suggestions? |

If you're going to do any overclocking, tons of advice can be found here. My 6600 is 3.24 ghz stable 24/7 and I'm lovin it!!!. But Kentsfield is around the corner!! I'm about to build my new computer on Monday, with an E6700 CPU. Now, this is going to be my first OC so I'd like some help with it. Cool. As always the best way to get the most out of your new setup is to have a good play with it. I've read about the CPU and it seems that the only way to OC it is by raising the FSB(correct me if I'm wrong). That's correct, but there are many other factors that will affect the overall overclockability and indeed overall performance of your system. The motherboard and memory you've chosen will have a huge effect on how far you'll go, and indeed what the performance envelope will be. As another poster here has recently found out, a motherboard without a sensible range of BIOS-level adjustability greatly limits your fun, so hope you got a good one. I bought an extra heatsink because I don't want to OC too much(only to around 3.0 GHZ or 3.2 maybe) To be honest the thermal efficiency of the Conroe is so good that at this sort of level you'll probably find the regular Intel thermal solution to be fine. Which aftermarket heatsink did you buy? Any suggestions? Erm, difficult for us to give you any specific suggestions given that a) You appear to have already bought your entire system b) You haven't told us what any of the kit, bar the CPU itself, actually is. As Al suggests, have a good read up on other people's experience, and have a .. Raising the FSB is how you make the CPU run faster, but doing that also raises the memory bus, and possibly PCIe/PCI/etc speeds, so you need to learn how to determine the source of the instability when it starts to crash. Beyond that, when you've got your system built and something's confusing you, just holler! -- Richard Hopkins Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom (replace nospam with pipex in reply address) The UK's leading technology reseller www.dabs.com |

DOWN, so that with a p5b you can select 6 to 9. I've also heard that the e6300 and e6400 are the better overclockers, but YMMV. -john "Grimscythe" wrote in message ups.com... E6700 Overclocking
I have an Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo.
The most recent bios (1407) added support for Quad core ($$$$$$$) as well as an ulocked multiplier. I can choose 6 - 9 for my 6600. I'm currently at 8 with FSB set to 400 on DDR2 667 ram (OCZ gold 2gb.) Bandwidth ~7700 (SiSandra 2007). Watch your temps if you start to increase Vcore. The Conroes tend to warm up quickly. My Vcore is set to auto, with speedstep and thermal control set to auto as well. My temps are ~32C idle and ~48C full load (core temp 0.9.0.091 beta). Also, if you get the big typhoon, swap out the stock fan for a silverstone 110 cfm 120mm fan!!! You're getting a nice rig, the C2D's are awesome!!! Al P.S. Check out overclock.net and pull up "sdumper"'s profile. He's done a lot of oc'ing with the 6700 on air as well as phase. Big Typhoon is 0.30 C/W. Using a more powerful fan could improve this a lot, at the expense of noise. Big Typhoon's selling point, is low noise. http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/06/...rs/page11.html E6700 is 65W at stock speed. http://processorfinder.intel.com/det...px?sSpec=SL9S7 Your expected temp rise running at 100% CPU, between case air temp and CPU temp, is 0.30 C/W * 65W = 19.5C. If your room air temp is 25C, the air inside your computer case is a bit warmer at say 32C, the processor should be at 32 + 19.5 = 51.5C . Overclocking and/or raising Vcore, will push it further. There are heatsinks available, with theta_R of better than 0.30 C/W. There are some lower than 0.20 C/W, if you need more cooling. Paul |
