Default Question about fixing laptop screen

Hello all. Someone recently gave me an old NEC Versa 4050C laptop. The LCD
screen is cracked, making only a small portion of the top of the screen
visible. I am currently using the computer at home with an external monitor for
ham radio related stuff (it's not my main computer). I was wondering if it was
worth trying to find a parts computer to replace the LCD screen and how
difficult it is to actually replace it if I found a working screen.

Any comments? Email replies are welcome.

Not really worth your time or money. The LCD will more than likely end up
costing as much as a new low-end laptop anyway. Replacing them is a tricky
thing to do even if you have the replacement parts.

Contact http://www.idparts.com/ on Monday and ask them. Doesn't cost a cent
to find out cost and availability. They have a ton of stuff -- probably more
than they know themselves. If you are the sort of ham who builds his own
equipment and doesn't have oversized or shakey fingers the changeover
shouldn't be that difficult (although, just figuring out how to get some
machines open is a real challenge).

I replaced the LCD on a Gateway. Got the laptop free since the screen was
broke, paid $80 off ebay for a new LCD, installed it myself. I think it was
worth it. Getting the bezel off was annoying, but putting in in was easy.
I had never done it before, was pretty much rip out the old one and connect
everything that was hooked to the old one to the new one and slide it in.
