Default Brother HL-1440 Laser Printer Question

Hi,
I'm looking to purchase an inexpensive laser printer for home use. I'd like
to stay under $200 if possible, although I suppose I could go up to $250.
The Brother seems to be a pretty decent choice, and adding more memory isn't
too expensive.

I'm wondering if it will print postscript though. I use Adobe True Type
Manager with W2000.

Anyone know?

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl

You might want to look at the Brother HL-5040
or HL-5050.

The 5040 is the successor to the 1440.
The 5050 adds Postscript 3.

Here are links to the products' homepages:

Brother 5040

The 5040 can be had for about $275. The 5050 is about $325.

You'd also want the following:

o- 128 MB 100-pin DIMM RAM memory for HL-5040/5050 -- about $35

o- Belkin 10-foot USB 2.0-capable printer cable -- about $8

That gets you up to about $318 or $368 to get going.

Cost per page for toner and drums is about 2.1 cents,
at 5% coverage.

Hope that helps. Sounds like you really don't need Postscript
features, you just need to print Postscript fonts. The 5040 would
probably work fine.

I just bought a Brother HL-5040 and the instructions say it will print PS,
but only if you install the optional drivers you must pay for on their site,
at least that's what they told me.

Correct. I don't need to print a PS file like when you print one, then
distill it to
get a PDF. I simply need to be able to print PDF files that have postscript
fonts
embedded.

The reason I'm concerned (and confused) is that Brother says the 1440 won't
work, but the whole point of a PDF is that the fonts are embedded so that it
goes cross-platform. I've used them for years for students and never had
anyone
say anything was "wrong" with the fonts when they printed the file. And I
use
decorative postscript fonts at time, which I'm sure they'd notice if there
was a
problem.

Can you (or someone) explain why the 1440 won't work? I honestly don't
understand it. LOL!

In addition, Adobe Type Manager says it works with most non PS printers
because it sends the fonts to the printer as bitmaps.
