decided on a canon lide. but which one. 25 or 60. whats the difference
beside price and usb speed. res looks same. went to www.which.co.uk - i'm a
member. only scanner to get maximum points for scanning was 8400f and lide
80. lide 80 now discontinued. so went for lide 500F. its got the scanning
head so i suspect may be slightly better despite again posted res being
same.

Anyone know where i can still get elements 3?

No, do not know about elements 3. Don't even know what it is, but am in
similar situation in terms of scanner search.

Want good fast flatbad for prints only. Must also do good job of B&W print.
Don't care about film scanning.

Been reading about LIDE 500f and almost got it, but I read that it really
sucks on B&W print sannaning. So much so that one guy posted not being able
to read barcode scans. MacReview confirms this. See:

http://www.macworld.com/2005/02/revi...500f/index.php

So I'm back to square one. Want something $150, fast and good.

Read that LIDE 80 is much noisier than 500f, but maybe a bit faster. The
LIDE series have very flimsy design - I'm afraid that the tiny hinges on the
cover will break very quickly.

Had this problem with other scanners. I actually prefer to scan in colour
and then select desaturate in photoshop. Most printers print higher res in
colour than in b+w.

One of the reasons i bought this scanner is due to scanning and restoring
alot of old photos. autoretestoring of old and faded photos is a heavily
touted selling point. As for being flimsy their small lightweight design is
a selling point too. Unless you scanning prints on an industrial scale and
are a huge hulking frankenstein of a man i wouldn't worry.

Haing now tested the scanner i have found it to be better than the scanner
it replaces. Sharper less noisy scans. Bang on colour accuracy and
brightness. In the menu selecting the adobe 1998 colour profile made for
perfect reproductions. leave auto tone on and usm on.

In the upright mode you are not going to have trouble with lid snapping off.
In fact it will only be at risk when pulling right off to do thick stuff. i
would suggest the full open mode where the lid lies flat beside the scanner.

Are you referring to Canon LIDE 500f here?

Have you tested the B&W text scan, both to .bmp or tiff, and directly to
..pdf. How about OCR. I do care about all funtions, as it would be my all
around scanner :-)

I find most comments, even by what seems "experts", not very complete.

Someone tested this scanner with OCR and proclaimed it was useless. Well,
maybe the scanner is fine, but the OCR software crap. Same applies to
scanning to .pdf. Basic scan can be sharp, but conversion to pdf very poor.
You have to question that sort of "testing".
