AMD 2800+ ASUS A7N8X 2.0deluxe, latest bios (1007)

Hi group.
I'm rather new at overclocking so I couldn't make a sense of all what I've
read in the recent 123 messages.
My question is:
I've got an AMD Barton 2800+ mounted on an ASUS A7N8X2.0deluxe MoBo with 2x
512MB DDR2 ram;
And I've just dared to update my bios to the latest available version at
ASUS site, v1007.
This - as far as I've understood - should enable my board to support 400MHz
FSB frequency. But, in my bios settings I only get 200Mhz as the maximum
available, when choosing the "Menu" item. Manually I can wind up to 300MHz,
but no chance to get to 400 - ?!? strange thing for me.
The other thing is, that, as soon as I try to tune up the multiplicator from
the default 12.5x to - let's say 14.0x I get strange values at the CPU
frequency - It falls from currently 2075MHz to 1250MHz or even to 1050.....
Could it be that I lack memory sticks aptable for 400MHz?
How can I find out the max frequency of my memory?
Am I overlooking something else?

200fsb is 400mhz, as far as i know there is no amd mobo that will go to
400fsb.

166 = 333, 200 = 400, ddr = double data rate

your step to a mp of 14 is a little too much, asus reboots into very save
defaults then.

I'm now getting 200MHz FSB at a multiplicator of 11.5x (i.e. 2300MHz) and a
vcore of 1.800V
But no matter whether I keep the vcore or I rise it up to 1.875V, my WinXP
becomes unstable as soon as I try to increase the Mulitplicator to 12.0x.
The symptoms then are error messages like "ntoskrnl.exe defective -
replace", the bluescreen of death after a clean boot-up or even a complete
loss of my keyboard (even not able to enter the bios - I had to switch down
the complete system for an hour to regain my USB-keyboard).
Should 2300MHz be the maximum for a 2800+ processor?

Well don't wait that long, remove battery and switch bios jumper a few
seconds, this should get you back to your bios defaults.
Lower your multiplier, up vmem to 2.8v and try a higher fsb, 1mhz steps,
test and find out your max fsb, then up multiplier again. Test your system
for stability with memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/ (I am lazy and use
http://hcidesign.com/memtest/) and prime95
http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm Other usefull utillities are aida32
(http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php) MBM5 for temperatures
(http://mbm.livewiredev.com/) and my personal favorite Speedfan 4.09
(http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) There's also an Uber bios for your
board whitch let's you up your chipset voltage to get more stability. Hope
you have good ram which will get you to 220 mhz or more.

Should 2300MHz be the maximum for a 2800+ processor?

From what I learned in this NG, a barton 2500+ is exactly the same as a
3200+. The bartons are all made the same way, all one production process,
the difference is that some barton's do 11x200 (3200+) at 1.65vcore easy
while others need a little more vcore to do the same,.. That's the way they
are rated and get their 'sticker' (2500 to 3200).
AFAIK the max Mhz for these proccessors depend on cooling, there are results
of 2600Mhz or more. Your MB limit's you to a vcore of 1.85v. Keep an eye on
your temeratures and you should be ok.
I have an Asus A7N8X-X, a 2600+ (333), PC3200 ddr and did a volt mod to get
more vcore (up to 2.3v).

In my case I can get higher scores but my PSU (+5v rail) and my cooling are
limiting factors. Working on that though :-)
