Default Motherboard speaker

A friends PC that I fixed recently has just that; a ~2" speaker in the
case attached to the speaker pins on the m/b. In fact, back in "the good
old days" all PCs had a small speaker.

What impedence does the speaker need to be? Will it be very, very
quiet?

No, the stupid Windows sounds will be just as bloody annoying ;-)

To the case anyway.

8 Ohms.

Yes

Probably not. It is important that you hear that first initial loud beep when
your computer first boots up. That is the message telling you your POST (power
on self-test) procedure has completed and all seems ok with your hardware -
good enough to proceed to BIOS and booting up your OS. It is vital to hear
that every time - very comforting!

That is the only reason I connect the speaker/PCV to the m/b - I hate
computers beeping at me but, as you say, that one is important or, more
importantly, the multiple beep when the POST fails.

Actual I want VOLUME. :-)

for volume you'd need to add a amp in to the circuit (do a search for an
IC call LM386)

The speaker attached to my computer case (meant for attaching to the
motherboard's PC Speaker connector) is marked 4 ohms for impedence. I
don't know if that's the correct impedence value for the PC speaker,
but that's the one that was supplied for this purpose.

Sound isn't "very, very quiet." If you want quiet, leave the system
without a PC speaker. It's not necessary for normal functioning, just
for trouble shooting if something goes wrong during post. The 2"
speaker you're proposing will be louder than the peizo speaker you've
already got, all else being equal.

For brief beeps the impedence probably doesn't matter much, a typical 4 to
16 Ohm would be fine. Most speakers aren't all that quiet to begin with,
I usually put a spot of electrical tape over the speaker to make it only
loud enough to hear... even worse are some boards that have the speaker
output though the external (main) speakers, which might be VERY loud if
the volume level is primarily controlled through the windows mixer instead
of an external amp gain.

As another poster (Martin) mentioned, if you need significant volume
increase you'd want to further amplify that speaker output.

usually you can not w/o additional circuitry /impedance not matching/
or even there is no sound on that contacts (piezo has its own beep
circuitry sometimes) & only on/off voltage; usually for connecting
dinamic speaker, there is additional connector on the MoBo ...
