Default 8INXP RAM question

but of a newbie, so I'm hoping that somemone can shed some light on this
situation for me.

machine came with 2 sticks of 256 in it, side by side, so I'm assuming
that they are taking advantage of the Dual DDR capabilities.

Now, I wanted a little more, so I just threw a stick of 512 Kingston
PC3200 (a pretty good deal for $108 at Frontier (Burrard and Broadway)).

For some reason (I'm assuming something to do with the Dual DDR), the
machine says it only has 768 MB RAM total, when there should be 1024.

Now, I looked through the BIOS and didn't see any settings and I read the
MB manual, but it really didn't explain things to my satisfaction (or
maybe understanding).

Is there a way or configeration where I can take advantage of the Dual
DDR with the 2*256, yet still get the full 1024. Any recomendations from
those who know?

Much appreciated

While I have not read your manual, it looks like you put a DS stick in a SS
location.

in my system the Dual DDR config is NOT side by side but slot 1 and 3, 2 and
4
for Dual DDR I thought you had to have pairs of memeory you only seem to
have 3 sticks

So do you have in a DDR pair of slots a 256 and a 512 that is being reported
as 256 ??

You might want to check that. I've done a little further reading and the
impression that I get from my manual is Dimm 1 and Dimm 3 are channel A;
this makes Dimms 2 and 4 channel B. In order for the dual channel
technology to work, the matching sticks of RAM must be inserted ONE IN EACH
CHANNEL. This means (to my understanding) that if you had 2 sitcks in, you
would want them side by side in Dimm 1 and Dimm 2.

My problem (again by reRing TFM) turned out to be that you just can't use
dual channel technology with 3 sticks. If fact, you lose your dual channel
capabilities of the two chips that were in there, because when using 3
sticks, only channel A is detected (not really sure why). This is the
reason I saw 256+512, whereas I though I was seeing 256+256+256.

Either way; I went and bought another 512 today, so my problems are solved.
They are running 512;512;256;256 in Dimms 1 - 4 respectivly.

Of course, my problems do not end here, but that is another post that I
will go and write now (called 'Connect the Dots' for those with MB
component wiring experience; specifically, my front audio connector)

Thanks to all for the responses

A
