New Dimension 4600 making strange sounds...

My Dell Dimension 4600 is making the same strange noise. This must be
a fairly common problem. Since it is periodic it must be something
like the disk drive parking the heads after scanning the platters, or
the OS checking for a floppy in the drive. While writing this post it
seems to have stopped but I'm not sure if that is because of no disk
activity or because I have a floppy in the drive.

It seems to be coming from the area just below the floppy which would
be the disk drive. I'm trying to track it down for sure but no luck so
far. Anyone have a solution to this?

Do you have the Hitachi Deskstar hard drive as well?

On my new 4600 I have in two months because of noise...3 fans a
power supply and a hard drive replaced.The computer is still noisy.It
seems to come down to a cheap fan that Dell has put in their wisdom in
the computer.I will send the computer back.Sometimes it gets so noisy
that I give up and shut down the computer.For the money spent all I
ask for is a quiet computer that does not whine.It was suggested that
I purchase a low decible fan.No way I have spent enough money.
Tech support has been great about the issue and sending replacement
parts but it is unsolved and I cannot and will not live with a
computer that I cannot enjoy...Peace...Harry

haha thank god i got the nice silent older dell 4400 i cant even hear it run
but the dell xps systems i notice my friend has sounds like a jet
