Default HELP! Unable to view files

Matthew Hood wrote:
I burned several images to a DVDRW using Nero 5.5 from XP Pro. Prior to my
initial burn, I recieved a notice telling me something about file names
being too long. So I started trying different settings. Finally, I was
able to burn my images. The burn process completed successfully. I just
checked the DVD to see if the files were there and did not check to make
sure I could read them. I could browse all the directories and see all the
files.

I then wiped my pc clean and did a clean install, thus removing all my
files. Now when I go to restore the images, I cannot open any of them. The
files are there on the DVD, and I can copy them to my local hdd, however
when I go to open them, I get a message about invalid images, or truncated
jpegs. I do not exactly recall what settings I used to burn everything, but
the results put underscores where spaces were, and capitalized all
directories and files.

ie:
Original File: x:\My Pictures\Jan 03\image 1.jpg
DVD File: x:\MY_PICTURES\JAN_03\IMAGE_1.JPG

Like I mentioned before, I can copy the files to my hdd, but I am unable to
open them.

Can anybody help me with this?

Unfortunately, not now.

The JPG, because of compression, is intolerant of single-bit errors
which are often negligible in uncompressed files. Your disc appears to
have a high error rate as burned - not uncommon on DVD-RW or CD-RW. They
are faulty on the disc and cannot be made good by reading or copying
them. You can try another reader, but that will seldom solve so severe a
problem.

Before starting to use any new medium, I recommend running a test. Burn
a representative disc with your hardware at your preferred speed, then
check it with a suitable program. I used CD/DVD Diagnostic from
Arrowhead for DVDs.

Once you find a satisfactory (low) error rate, use that speed and that
medium. Do not assume that because your drive is rated 4x and the medium
is rated 4x that the disc will write well at that speed in your drive.

What program are you using to view the .jpg's? Some graphics programs
can correct minor errors and at least to display up to the point of
truncation. Search for graphics programs with those capability.

Also try these programs:

IsoBuster

CD/DVD Diagnostic
