Default Desktop icon layout resets every 'refresh'

I've come across a problem installing the 5.7 cats. After the
installation was complete, the desktop icon layout would reset, probably
to the same layout you get when using Autolayout. I use Icon Restore to
get things back to what they were pre-install, but everytime the desktop
refreshes, the layout resets once more.

Also, the transparency effects on menu items are running extremely slowly.

Any ideas on how to fix?
