Default LS 2000/Vue Scan Halo and low contrast???

Hi,
I seem to be having difficulty with a particular slide that is showing a
"halo" along a boundary between dark (almost black) and bright gold - the
gold is causing a halo (I've looked at the slide with a loupe and I can't
see a halo)

Also, the contrast seems to be lower than the actual slide (this I've seen
on more than one slide)

Is this a Nikon problem or a vuescan setting (though I've fiddled quite a
bit with the vuescan settings and can't seem to make the halo go away) The
best image I got was with ViewScan's default settings.

Do film scanners "get old" or dirty? - How would I clean it?

Follow this link to see the image. Look at the gold band along the bottom
and the halo
above it. www.durrenberger.com/qat.jpg (72dpi)

Nikon LS-2000 and VueScan 7.6.45

Thanks,
Mark

Oddly, the halo area (gold) is marked as "IR Clean" by VueScan. Is there
somthing about the color gold that the IR scan can't do?

Mac,
Thanks. Cleaning the mirror worked great. The bad news is that the link you
provided, while full of great info, did not warn me on how tight some of the
screws were. I had to use a different approach to getting at the main mirror
and cleaning it (q-tips and rubbing alcohol).

Non-the-less it's clean and the halo is gone.

Mark

Yep, dirty mirrors/lens in the 2000 is common cause of halo.
There are several sites showing cleaning techniques. Search Google
archives on comp.periphs.scanner and you should find them.

Oh, here's one I had bookmarked:
