Can't install 6200 driver on Mandriva 2006

I'm having a problem with ghosting cursors, (not the mouse cursor) particularly when I move a cursor quickly around a text box on a website or in openoffice.org.

I'm trying to install the nvidia driver, using the instructions on the website, but no love.

improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs
from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as
rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from
obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s).
