I have never been real sure about this: Should the Array card be
placed in slot one?

It doesn't matter. The only cards that are slot sensitive are the Remote
Insight Boards.

Exactly

Great! Then in the 3000 you want the Array Controller to be in the last
slot (the one closest to the open case panel) to make the cabling
easier.

get yourself a Smart Array Controller card.
Jeffrey Alsip

Will it work with the current setup?
Is it a Compaq product?
Wouldn't the shipping be more than the card?
Would the card need different cables?
Does it need special setup software?
Is it "drop in and use"?

thanks,
charles......

Yes
Yes
Probably
No
Not Really
Pretty Much

How much would be my total cost with shipping?
How long would it take to get to Keene, TX, cheapest shipping?
How much speed increase should I expect?
I don't think there are any extra cables in the machine.
If I get the machine configured and running sat, wouldn't I have
to do it all over again when I put the new card in?

The owner of the building where the computer is located finally
contacted me and we will prabably get together on Sat afternoon.
I downloaded and burned the SS5.5 cd at 4X the slowest speed
my burner software would go. If I get the money for the card,
will you make sure I have all the links to download the extra
software I need?

later,
charles.....

depends on the seller, ask them
depends on the seller, where are they?
its appreciable
so get a couple cables
yes

All the links you need are on the HP site. You need to learn your way around
and be your own best support resource.

Nutcracker,
Would it not be cheaper and less time consuming to give this guy your FedEx
account number and let him send it to you for a free upgrade and setup job
??!!!

You guys have offered about everything except that ...... I know, stay
tuned, hahaha

Perhaps you were responding to my offer to supply you with a Smart
Array Controller. I am in Chicago, as is Nutcracker, but that doesn't
matter. The cost will be that that of a Priority Mail Flat Rate box
measuring 14x12x3.5". I think the flat rate is around $7.00. This gives
me the opportunity to put as much in the box as I can fit (no weight
restrictions). You will get two Smart Cards, two or three cables, a
copy of Smartstart (that I have tested and know works), a duplex
adapter, and whatever else I can think of that will fit. I hope to have
room to get a few 9.1G drives in to fill up your slots.

If you feel you need more toys in the future, we can talk about it
then. Once you see how well the Smart Array Controller works, you will
experience an instataneous desire to get as many drives as your machine
can hold.

Since you seem a little intimidated by the Compaq website, it will be a
simple matter for me to put some manuals on a CD for you...Hardware and
Maintenance, Setup Guide, etc. But sooner or later, you will have to
take the plunge and dive into that website.

I will be gone until Sunday night. If you decide to take this deal,
just post a response here or send me email. I have tried to contact you
through email, but have not received a response....thus, this public
post.

LC, anything else he will need (that is small enough to fit in the
box)?

the only thing i can think of would be an IMD if his system doesnt have one,
and possibly a redundant fan kit.

Yes. I have read several horror stores about getting raid controllers
to work especially under Linux. I would assume that Windows
would be no problem. The service packs are all written to work
with/under Windows. So to work on this machine is not purely a
Linux experience from a support standpoint. Does the Smart
Array Controller have a model number associated with it?

Hope you have a good time,
charles.....

Sorry for the email thing. I don't put in a real address since I don't
need more spam than I already get. I sent an email direct to you.

later,
charles....
