Default Intel to come out with budget Core-2 based dual core Pentium

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/dis...115223825.html

Intel Corp. reportedly plans to scrap the introduction of mainstream
single-core microprocessors based on the Core 2 micro-architecture and
reportedly plans to introduce dual-core Pentium E2000 family in
mid-2007 instead to target market segments of mainstream computers,
the reports claim.

The forthcoming Pentium E2000 family will initially consist of two
processors – Intel Pentium E2140 (1.60GHz) and Intel Pentium E2160
(1.80GHz) – both based on the Conroe 1M core and produced using 65nm
fabrication process, according to a news-story by HKEPC web-site. The
new dual-core chips will have 1MB of unified level-two cache, will be
compatible with 800MHz processor system bus, will support 64-bit
capability, execute disable bit, Intel’s Enhanced SpeedStep technology
and will have 65W thermal design power.

1MB of L2? Well, that'll certainly allow them to make a profit out of
their yields.

I was under impression that Intel is dumping the tainted Pentium brand
in favor of Core. Netbust was supposed to be Pentium end of the road.
Branding Conroe based CPU a Pentium would be quite a twist.

I'd guess that the word "Pentium" here is used in error.

However, I would not be surprised to see Intel continue to use the
"Celeron" brand for their low-end chips...

I don't know if the branding is accurate or not, but calling the
Pentium brand "tainted" is quite inaccurate. The word "Pentium" is
probably the second strongest branding of all personal computing
(behind only "Windows"). While a few of us tech geeks might remember
some issues like the original Pentium floating point bug or the
lackluster performance and high power consumption of the last Pentium
chips, the brand as a whole is HUGE. I'm sure that if you hang around
a computer shop for a few hours you'll hear more than a few customers
ask a salesperson "what sort of Pentium does this computer have",
regardless of whether the computer uses a Pentium-branded processor or
not.
