Overclocking 2500+ Barton to 3200+ Help please
Hi to all in this Newsgroup.
I'm new to overclocking the AMD Barton processors and I need some help with sorting out bios settings to get my machine to reach 3200+ from a 2500+. My components are as follows: MSI K7N2 Delta-L 400FSB Nforce 2 chipset Motherboard AMD 2500+ Barton processor (Retail) 2 X 256MB Samsung original DDR PC3200 Cas 3.0 memory running in dual channel Akasa 3200+ rated copper faced heatsink/fan Samsung 120GB 7200rpm + 80Gb 7200rpm Hard drives Philips Dvd Writer plus DVD combi drive Soundblaster Live 5.1 digital sound card Avermedia Tv card 350 Watt PSU Geforce FX 5600 Ultra 256MB Machine is presently running perfectly stable as a 2500+ and with memory running at 400 Fsb, but when I try changing CPU FSB to 200 from 166 in the bios and reboot, it posts as a 3200+, ID's memory correctly, gets as far as detecting Hard disks and then screen goes black and thats it. On rebooting sometimes it won't even post, but if I leave it a few minutes I can get back into the bios and put CPU FSB back to 166 and all is well again. Question is "Am I doing something wrong or not making some additional needed changes in the bios settings, or is it that some 2500+ Bartons will not overclock to 3200+ and its the luck of the draw so to speak?" Any input or advice on necessary settings from those who have successfully overclocked a 2500+ to 3200+ with an MSI Nforce 2 board would be extremely appreciated. Thanks in advance. Dave |

Dave I have a Soltek Nforce 2 board the same processor and ( 2 x 512) MB Samsung DDR PC3200 RAM. With only one 512 stick in I could only get the FSB up to 197. Any higher and it wouldn't boot. With both sticks in the dual channel slots I could get to 200, but it didn't show the 'Dual Channel Enabled' message at startup. Only after I changed the memory timings to 'Aggressive' did the dual channel start working. btw, I'm at 10.5 x 200 = 2100 ish ( 3000+). I havn't tried to get to 3200+ speeds because if it don't boot it screws up my drivers ROYALLY. I'm happy the way it is, my last system was a 850 T'bird. -- Change netscape.net to ns.sympatico.ca to reply. |

Hi, if your memory is running at 200MHz (400DDR) when your Barton is running on the 166MHz FSB then it looks like you are running an *Async* memory ratio (to make the memory run faster than the CPU FSB. If you are then changing the FSB to 200MHz and leaving this memory set-up as Async then it will probably be running to fast. Did you set the memory back to auto? -- Wayne ][ Concepts, Theory, Learning Curves, and woman with big bOObs! |
