I was using my computer (surfing the Web) and then XP told me delayed write failed. Then, I
loaded up HD Tune and SpeedFan separately to check SMART Status. They both showed a
failure. Here's HD tune:

I rebooted my computer, and my BIOS complained about SMART status error. I am a bit scared.
Is this a warning that my old IBM HDD (got it installed on 9/9/2001 according to my
computer history) is failing? I am currently making a Ghost 2003 image backup of the drive
to bigger drive just in case.

Can anyone please tell me what this means and if I should get a new HDD right away to
replace it? Or ways to be sure that there is really a problem?

Thank you in advance.

You should be. In spades if you dont have proper backups.

Is this a warning that my old IBM HDD (got it installed
on 9/9/2001 according to my computer history) is failing?

That it's died, actually.

I am currently making a Ghost 2003 image
backup of the drive to bigger drive just in case.

You should have done that LONG ago with a 60GXP.

Can anyone please tell me what this means

That its died, Jim/Ant.

and if I should get a new HDD right away to replace it?

Yep.

Or ways to be sure that there is really a problem?

You've got that already.

Thank you in advance.

And India invented that rather ingenious solution to the surplus mother in law

Your HDD is about to fail because of too many relocated bad sectors. You
can disable SMART so it will not anoy you. You should run selfscan on HDD or
scan surfaces and put defects to P-list to heal your HDD

Thanks. I already put the drive out of commission. I will keep it handy just in case though. I
did notice Ghost 2003 was only giving me about 480 MB/sec file transfer. That's only 8 MB/sec.
That sounds slow.

Default (05) Reallocated Sector Count 1 1 5 1882 Failed

I was using my computer (surfing the Web) and then XP
told me delayed write failed. Then, I loaded up HD Tune
and SpeedFan separately to check SMART Status.
They both showed a failure.

Damn, I've lost my mpg of the Death March |-(

Here's HD tune:

I rebooted my computer, and my BIOS complained
about SMART status error. I am a bit scared.

I am using my friend's Seagate ST380011A 80 GB HDD for now.
I was able to copy and restore before it was too late. Whew.

Yeah, those 60GXPs can go down a lot more suddenly than that.

You must have stopped that furious grave dancing.

:P

Since you said it should be dead, how come it still works?

Thats the way 60GXPs die.

Ah. Well, it isn't dead yet! Hopefully, I will never have to know since I am using a drive
replacement.

BIOS and Windows were annoying me about the errors.

Yeah, those are the evidence that its dying.

My first time I ever seen a SMART tell me something big is bad.

I did notice Windows said a disk error at about 11:08 AM PDT:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 52
Date: 7/29/2006

What's DR1??

Drive 1.

Weird, I never saw Windows say that before. I always see something like "\Device\Harddisk1\D"
in the past.

Finally, that old IBM drive showed problems. Weird. Heh, both of my
Quantum HDDs (6.4 GB before 12/1998 and 15 GB from 8/2000)
are still alive and having no problems! Man, I miss Quantum.

Those 60GXPs werent called DeathStars for nuffin.

Generated a full class action suit.

Heh, yeah but mine took forever to die.

The SMART attributes are reliable if they are this clear. The drive
is dying. Replace it immediately and don't trust if for anything.

I seriously doubt this HDD can be "healed". It may be possible
to prolong its dying process a bit, but it is higly likely
that it will get more bad secors and exhaust its store of
spares soon. From then one each defective secotor means data
loss.

Already done. I have the IBM HDD on my desk in case I need to restore again if the replacement
one is bad.
