8800's are $500+ now.. what about in 6 months?
*I* can't justify dropping $500 or more for a *video card*.
I also plan to purchase a power gaming PC at year's end, or so, based on how much time i'll have available when my now 1.5 month old son turns 6 months and counting. But that's another story altogether! lol So.. will these cards still be $500+ in 6 months? And in 6 months, can we expect to see new revisions or even successors to these cards? What i'm trying to gather is - is it silly to spend $500 when in 6 months to a year the prices will drop and/or there will be something "even better" ? Just trying to get a feel for the video card market and what's expected in the next year. |

Much faster, better, etc. What i'm trying to gather is - is it silly to spend $500 when in 6 months to a year the prices will drop and/or there will be something "even better" ? It is... but that is the way things happen in the computer world. Always a 'faster gun'. Always a better deal. What's a person to do? Just trying to get a feel for the video card market and what's expected in the next year. Buy the top of the line on Tuesday... a better one for cheaper is put on Friday. That's not going to change. And in 6 months, can we expect to see new revisions or even successors to these cards? Well, let me share with you my experience. I put together a dream system with a pretty unlimited budget (for me) about 18 months ago. Antec 180 case, FX-57, Asus A8N-E, twin 74 Gig Raptors in RAID0, 250Gig SATA, 4 Gig OCZ RAM and a eVGA 7800GTX OC 256Mb card. The card cost me $500 then. 6 months down the road, the 7900 series was out, but my card was $75 less. Now they sell on eBay and other places new now for less than $200 now. I could buy another and run them in SLI and it would likely be comparable to the 8800 series except for DX10 compliance. I play Quake4 at 1600x1200 with everything maxed out without a hitch on just my original card. When I run into a new game I use that seems actually slow, I'll probably do this. |
