Still a little time left... Is there any advantage? Running Vista.

Vista has Direct X 10. 8600 supports DX10. Not sure on what people say
about the card but they compare it with the 8800 series which is the top
one. DX10 stuff will become quite common in the future.

Vista WILL have DirectX 10, when it comes out. It isn't out yet.

There are no DX 10 games yet, but DX 10 is already in Vista. Don't listen to
the lintrolls.

It depends on the game. The 7900GS has greater raw fill rate and memory
bandwidth, so it is faster than the 8600GTS in older games (BF2, FEAR,
Prey), but slower in newer games (Oblivion, STALKER).

DX10 capability actually is not much of an asset, since the 8600GTS is
likely too slow for upcoming DX10 games.

Er, nope, DX10 runtimes have not been released yet. Vista shipped with only
DX9 capability.

On the subject of games, just having a game supporting DX10 on paper is not
enough. The said game will have to show either a significant boost in image
quality or performance running in DX10 mode to justify all the expense of
new hardware.

By the same time next year DX10.1 will be available, according to
Microsoft's WinHEC presentation. All the current Geforce G8x and (possibly
Radeon R6x0) cards will no longer be feature-complete. No matter what you
buy, it is always a constantly moving target.

P.S. You don't need to be a "lintroll" to dislike Vista. Vista's biggest
competitor is XP. :-)

Are you running Vista? I'll walk you through it if your too dense....

Click the start orb, type dxdiag in the search bar, hit enter, dxdiag will
run, and it will show you what version of Dx you are running. What does it
say? Hmmmmmmm?

What does it say? I'm not being sarcastic (at the moment), just curious.
