Default Can Windows Critical Updates Screw Up Nero?

Have been using Nero 5.5.9.17 with a TDK 48x16x48 VeloCD and Win 98SE for a
full year with absolutely no complaints.

I got a security bug this week and finally downloaded several long-neglected
fixes and patches from windowsupdate. These included:

9 generic security updates (HTML & IE related)
2 Windows 7.1 Media Player Security Updates (rarely use it, but thought
WTH!),
Microsoft Virtual Machine Update, and
MDAC 2.1 Security Update.

Now Nero and/or my burner have gone very screwy.

The main complaint is that the Buffer Underrun Protection kicks in and locks
up the machine for no good reason, but I've also have a few nondescript
write error crashes, and it just feels like Nero is taking a lot longer to
do things like write lead-ins and display all manner of drop-down menus and
option boxes.

Drives are defragged and virus free, DMA is on, firmware is current, media
is Fuji TY. I thought at first the drive might be dying -- as the
symptoms were similar to a another dead VeloCD I had a year ago -- so I
swapped my spasmodic drive with a similar VeloCD. Same symptoms, though
not nearly as pronounced.

Software or hardware? Or Both?

Any and all suggestions welcome. I've been coaster free for close to a
year, and I miss it dearly.

Well, Win98 is screwy all by itself--that you have used any version of

Nero
for a full year with no problems at all is impressive. (I'm happy with
mine in spite of the occasional blue screens.)

Did you try reinstalling Nero--pref. the latest version? That's an

obvious
step, since one of the things Ahead does in these revisions is to try to
quash new bugs. There are so many things that can go wrong with Win98 it
seems a waste of time trying to go through them all.

I have considered this fix. May go this route if no other smoking gun
found.

Do you know which is Nero's most current stable version?

Folks, may I ask a sort-of related question?

A major blunder wiped out all my Windows programs and data. When I went to
reinstall Nero 5.0.4.8, turns out I no longer have it. It worked fine for 3
years. Like Uncle D.L., I had no complaints.

I looked with Google, can't seem to locate it. I don't feel like getting a
fancy new Nero.

Will Burnatonce serve to make data discs? Primarily for backup of HD files
(which I should've done more often!)

Plextor 8x4x32, Windows 98 original, no critical updates.

Thanks,

Sheldon

The current, and last, version of 5.5 is 5.5.10.54, available for download
at Ahead. Can't say what it might do in Win98, but it's quite stable here.
You should DL it anyway, as it will soon be discontinued.
If I had to point a finger I would choose your WMP updates, some of them
included burner support that used to raise hell with burners back when. It's
very rare for software problems to cause buffer under-run, that's really a
hardware thing, and the burner has nothing to do with it.

Nero 5048 is an update which is still offered as a free download on the =
Ahead website. Look in Downloads Previous Versions.

Note that it's an update for any existing version of Nero 5.0.
