Hey man ... cut a brother some slack. I have been in Philly for 4 days

doing
DR exercises ... i have had about 12 hours of sleep since i got here,

and as
i write this .... 19.5 hours and still going. I might be a little
tired,

but
the monkeys i see from the corner of my eyes assure me that its just
too
much cheese steak.

A N Y W A Y ....

I still think this guy needs to do a system erase to get everything

clear.
Its a good thing to see SS run from the abolute beginning ....

This will also give him the change to learn what to do with the little
floppy he made, and it will also give him some insight as to "the order

of
things" in a compaq world.

It will also clear up his storage system not responding condition, and
eventually give him the ACU ....

this guy is in for some fun !!!!

I have a good quantity of slack available...consider a sizeable piece
cut. If I had a choice between DR excercises and a root-canal, I might
actually choose the root-canal.

So, although I may have provided answers to the actual errors the OP
was receiving, LC is most certainly correct...a full erase, and a start
from scratch, is the way to go. You have what is, essentially, a brand
new server (new to you) and it should begin with a clean slate.

He is also right when he says: "this guy is in for some fun !!!!". I
envy you for that. I am not even going to provide a quick link to the
manuals, but I CAN tell you that the ProLiant 3000 Hardware and
Maintenance Manual is available on the Compaq website. Search the site
(figure out how to get around in there) and download a copy of this
manual...you will refer to it frequently.

Jeff

Hello Team...sorry just felt right.

You join muchin' pizza in Canterbury Kent, Southern England. Saw the
dentist
last week just three fillings.

Anyway, slot 4 card removed, although there is a ribbon cable from this
card
to the back of the SCSI cradle. I mention this as I still get no detection
of the "in box" drives via the built in Array Controller.

Its getting close to sandman time so I need to investigate whether the
optional card that this box had (as Jeff identified) led to some hardware
(i.e. SCSI bay) being disabled.

I ran a full erase, but still have that issue.

Keep you updated, detective hat on!

Steve

uhm ... your box doesnt have a built in array controller ....

did you find the little terminator on the back of the drive cage? you have a
cabling / termination issue. im sure of it. I'll bet you a pint of your
favorite lager ..

Wierd... I have to pay for root canal work. I get paid for DR work.
And DR is fun...

Just remind me - this is a PL3000 with a Smart-2DH right?

Take the SA-2DH out of the server, and plug the SCSI cable into the onboard
SCSI interface. You should then be able to see each drive as the server
starts up - it should tell you what the drive is. If it does not do that,
your cable or your disk backplane is defective. If you see one or more
disks, all those disks, the cable and the backplane are OK.

Remove any suspect drives

Plug the SA-2DH back in, connect the cable back up to it, and see what
happens when you try to configure it through SmartStart (5.50). If required,
run a system erase. Also might be worth trying the SA-2DH in a different
slot, but I think you'll find that the PCI slots and the SA-2DH are fine.

I think you will find that despite the disk backplane having power (lights
flash once on boot), you'll find that it is defective and needs to be
replaced.

Yes, this is a floor standing PL3000 with two extra PCI cards.

.......I give up!

I have now had enough of reboots and vain hope when the message "Scanning
for SCSI Devices. . ." only to be greeted with "No SCSI Devices Detected".

I have now tried the two on board SCSI sockets (A & B), basically same
results and then tried both the SCSI PCI cards. These two do take me through
to the ACU in Smart Start, but the drives are still not visible when we get
to that stage.

Yes I do get the POST drive flashes, but nothing else and I now see that
three of the drives show a green LED within the drive case, the other three
show nothing. I've also checked the cable that goes from the board(s) to the
SCSI drive bay and it looks OK.

Therefore, I deduce either;

all six drives are faulty. Unlikely as surely the service orange LED would
be on at least one of them.

or

There is something wrong with the disk backplane as noted by Jez T. Looks
like this is the case, this is the common element (along with the cable) and
would go to explain the random "on" green internal LED on some of the
drives.

Ah well, that's ebay for you, better go back there for a disk backplane!

Cheers for all the help,

Steve (Canterbury, Kent)

I had a Proliant 5500R that died a while back with basically the same sort
of failure.. It refused to see any drives and was complaining about a handshaking
issue with the backplane.. I took it apart and cleaned all contacts, cables, etc

No luck.. I ended up moving to a Proliant 6400R for $75 and haven't looked back.
