Can you use any compaq monitor on other compaqs?

I keep getting replace hard drive because of eminent failure message so
was just thinking of getting the package that has the tower keyboard and
mouse at wal mart and save since the monitor is still working.

I might be in the wrong group.

I am talking about a compaq pc. The tower server is the operating system
that sits on the floor or on the table that runs the computer. If you
google images "tower server" there should be about ten pictures out of
the first twenty.

What do you mean by tower server? Are you talking about the industrial
ones that run the whole network like in a college that links all the
pc's together?

Yes my walmart sells the home pc compaq tower servers.

Hmm.. You might want to go look in the Wikipedia for the definition of
operating system :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system

An Operating system is a program NOT a box.. I think you're confused..

I doubt that..

In general, servers (whether tower (aka upright config) or rack mounted)
are not something the home user buys but are what businesses buy and are
specifically designed for longer run times (e.g. higher MTBF), frequently
have LOTS of disks (e.g. hardware RAID) and are (usually) running operating
systems like Windows Advanced Server, XP Pro, or similar (e.g. NOT Windows 98,
Windows ME, Win2k plain, or XP home.. I still believe you're in the wrong group..

If you want to learn more about a Compaq server, checkout the following
site : http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/platforms/

Pick just about any of the Proliant models listed there and you'll see what
I'm talking about -- those are NOT desktop models that average joe has
sitting at home on his kitchen table -- they usually cost too much
(although some of their entry level models do go as low as $500) and have
features that are just not needed for average joe such as redundant power
supplies, remote monitoring, etc.

even still ....

a monitor is a monitor. i it works with a PC, it should work with ANY PC.

The only detail to keep in mind is the type of connector at the end of the
cable. If its a D-Sub (analog), thats the normal plug at the end. On the
computer, the plastic part you connect the monitor to is blue. If its DVI
(digital), the connector is almost rectangular, and the plug in the back of
the PC is white.

there are adapters to go from DVI to D-Sub, so long as your video card can
do digital or analog.

This is all true.

I would like to mention a possible problem with "resolution". If you
have an old monitor coupled with a new video card, you may not be able
to use the video card to it's full capacity.

This is especially true when running a linux distribution...if the
install cannot detect both element exactly, you may be forced to run
them as "Standard VGA" which means you will never achieve more that
800x600@256 colors (a difficult resolution to live with). It is
possible to edit the configuration files (xorg.conf, for instance) to
reflect the proper settings...but you need to be comfortable with unix
file editors to pull this off.
