Would you please point to any mainboard owner's manual that says
there is any benefit to removing the battery.

Thank you.

For his board (7vax) the 'remove the battery' instructions are on Page 20
of the manual.
This board has *no* junper for clearing the BIOS.

Your are correct. They soon saw the error of their ways and fixed the
problem on newer boards.

Reset just sets everything to factory default.

First off thx for your input. SW1 is already set to 166 but I thought the
Athlon XP 3000+ CPU
had a clock ratio of 13 no? Haven't tried a BIOS reset but was wondering
what the system effect would be
from that?

Just upgraded to a "new" Athlon XP 3000+ 333FSB CPU on a GA-7VAX

rev1.1
m/b and
no boot. The FSB dipswitches set to 166FSB and clock multiplier is set

to
auto. On power-up the hard drive light briefly lights, then the optical
drive lights, then there is a very short single speaker beep then the
whole sequence keeps repeating until I power down. Re-installed

original
CPU (Athlon XP 2800+) with no dipswitch changes and boot-up happens
normally. I also tried to set the clock multiplier dips to 12.5 but
still got the same looping sequence stated previously. The 3000+ chip
info shows "AXDA3000DKV4D" which id's the chip as 333FSB. Would these
facts add up to a defective CPU or am I missing something here?
tia. . .cil

I'd set SW1 166 and the and the clock ratio to 12X.

Would also re-set the BIOS with the box unpluged from the wall and the
battery removed for 30 seconds.

It's not his fault.

That's only a name string update anyhow. How are you getting on? This
same thing happened to me once with a 7VAXP and I was up all night. I
swore blind I'd set the jumpers right but in the end I had not. Just asI
was thinking the CPU was dead I tried something else and it fired up! I
know I couldn't get it to work with the multiplier at "auto". Beyond that
it is lost in my memory. As someone suggested, if all else fails, start
with a low multiplier.
