Default Will this board take an 820?

Hi all,

I want to go dual core and have decided on Intel. I am going with the 820
because of its good price, but on the MoBo side, I am confused. I have read
everywhere that it needs a 945, 955 or 975 chipset, but at ebuyer.com, they
have the ASUS P5SD2-X listed as a dual core supported board:

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=98340

Is it a dual core board? Or should I look further up the rpice bracket at
say, a P5PL2?

Thanks,

Neil

The supported CPU list for the P5SD2-X:

http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusuppor...=en-us&cache=1

(From http://processorfinder.intel.com , for Pentium D)

Intel Pentium D processor Filter Results

sSpec# | CPU Speed | Bus Speed | Tech | Step | Cache | Package

SL94P 3.40 GHz 800 MHz 65 nm 4MB (2x2) 775 pin 950
SL8CM 3.20 GHz 800 MHz 90 nm B0 2MB 775 pin 840
SL94Q 3.20 GHz 800 MHz 65 nm B1 4MB (2x2) 775 pin
SL88R 3.20 GHz 800 MHz 90 nm A0 2MB 775 pin
SL88S 3 GHz 800 MHz 90 nm A0 2MB 775 pin
SL8CN 3 GHz 800 MHz 90 nm B0 2MB 775 pin
SL94R 3 GHz 800 MHz 65 nm B1 4MB (2x2) 775 pin
SL88T 2.80 GHz 800 MHz 90 nm A0 2MB 775 pin
SL8CP 2.80 GHz 800 MHz 90 nm B0 2MB 775 pin
SL94S 2.80 GHz 800 MHz 65 nm B1 4MB (2x2) 775 pin

I think the 65nm stuff is Pressler. The 90nm stuff is Smithfield.
The reason Asus is mentioning the Stepping Code A0 amd B0 is
to distinguish the fact that the P5SD2-X supports Smithfield,
or at least what those 90nm ones happen to be called. (I cannot
keep track of Intel any more...)

http://www.intel.com/products/proces...info_table.pdf

Now the P5PL2 table is a bit strange, as it is missing the 90nm B0
processors. I expect that is a typo, but you never know...

http://support.asus.com.tw/cpusuppor...=en-us&cache=1

So both support dual core processors, but the P5PL2 supports
the newest 65nm ones. The P5PL2 would also allow you to use a
dual width video card, and still have access to your three PCI
slots. The P5SD2-X slot layout is a bit different.

The reports on Newegg are that the 65nm processors run cooler, so
if you can afford the slight price difference on the 920, it
might be a better choice.

These are all the motherboards that support a 920 (from cpusupport):

Pentium D 920(2.8GHz, 800 FSB, L2 4MB, revB1)

Paul,

Thats a great help, thanks. I will probably go with some sort of combi of
those 4 products. If my budget doesn't allow, I'll go P5SD2-X +820, or
depending on how far it may allow, upto the P5LD2 +920. Hey - My birthday
is next Sunday, so y' never know!

Thanks again,

Neil
