New theory/story: Static discharge from summer shoes while connecting new mouse.
Hello,
I have new theory/story how I might have killed my motherboard: I was wearing these summer shoes, and they build up lot's of static electricty with my floor I think, not 100% sure, could also be supermarket floor or both. But when I go to the supermarket I got major static electricity discharges when touching the metal casings. Some weeks ago I bought a new Logitech G3 mouse to replace damaged Logitech Click! mouse. I was probably wearing my summer shoes and then as I replaced the mouse, and then, as I stuck the usb cable into the back of the pc, I must have touched the metal (?) and a static discharge might have happened, damaging the motherboard. God damn ! Could be the cause ! So questions: 1. How to prevent this in the future ? 2. What can buy to prevent this ? 3. Where can buy it ? 4. Is there a static electricty detector ?! THIS IS NUTS ! =D Bye, Skybuck. P.S.: Gonna post this to a dutch newsgroup as well Sorry for the english but saves me from re-writing the whole damn thing in Dutch = and most people known english anyway and I need a dutch story to supply me with stuff =D and finally maybe the electronics dude find this interesting, know something and could help or build something ! Static eletricity is invisible, how am I supposed to know when I am charged ?!?!? Come on man, I need something to help me with that ! |

Always touch the metal of the case before touching anything inside. If you are fitting components then make sure you are connected to the case before you remove the component from its anti static container. There are earthing straps that are used to permanently make that connection. http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...0STRAP&doy=1m6 Eric -- Remove the dross to contact me directly |

Static eletricity is invisible, how am I supposed to know when I am charged ?!?!? Come on man, I need something to help me with that ! Well... I already lost 2 Wacom tablets due to static discharges. Sat down in the chair, reached for the pen and the spark goes from my hand to the tablet, at least an inch in distance.... Poof. Dead. :-( In the new office no more such problems. I never found something that would prevent it, not even anti static mats on the floor. Richard. |

When your body is charged, you should discharge yourself via the metal computer case, BEFORE touching connections or input devices. Change shoes, go barefoot, raise the humidity in the room, ground the things you are likely to touch before the computer, etc.. Get rid of the charge before touching sensitive wires - anything that connects directly to the computer. Even the plastic housing on the mouse or keyboard isn't protection when you have a high static charge. It doesn't have to be a "hard" ground - you just need a way to bleed off the charge. High humidity, dirty carpet, etc.. They sell wrist bands that carry the charge to ground, conductive plastic mats, and devices to check the static charge. Most have some high resistance value so you won't be electrocuted if you happen to be grounded through the device and touch a hot wire. I make it a point of unplugging the computer when swapping boards and doing maintenance, then touching the chassis, then reaching in to touch the boards - or holding the chassis with one hand and working with the other - the important thing is that the computer have the same voltage on it as I have on me. Pay more attention to good practice when the air is very dry. -- ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

(Maybe you are innocent of the charge of murdering a new motherboard.) Any chance of returning to the manufacturer for a refund? -MD |

Hi,
I am not a believer ! I am scientist for god sakes LOL I need proof that these measurements work. That's why I want a static electricity detector ! Bye, Skybuck. |

Nicholas Sherlock I might have to hold off on that one Nich I was planning on transferring myself into a computer But that will have to wait if my Dream machine can't even take static discharge **** or any other of that kind of **** Bye, Skybuck. |
