Default Back to the desktop with Asus 9800XT

Howdy folks....

I have a problem... Recently built a new 'puter and am still playing
the ancient DM Half-Life.... Damn, I love that game...

My specs a
P4 3ghz chip
Asus P4C800 MB
Asus Radeon 9800XT
1 gig of DDR3200 RAM
Latest Video card drivers..

Every few minutes I'm sent back to the desktop... The game is still
open but minimized... When I click on the game to maximize it it comes
up as a black screen... I can hit ESC and it shows the game but my
mouse is dead... Hit escape again and a black screen, again and all is
well for a few minutes.... Any ideas??? Drivers??? Heat??? The Video
card fan really sings....

it sounds like the fastwrite issue with the 3.9 cats and possibly the
corruption associated with opengl

turning off fastwrites and re installing directx 9.0b over the top of the
exisiting instal;l worked for me with similar crashes in call of duty.
