New PC with 8800GT - is my driver the latest?
In Device Manager on this new XP Pro PC I see
Driver Provider: NVIDIA Driver Date: 05/12/2007 Driver Version: 6.14.11.6921 That looks pretty recent, but just in case I chose 'Update Driver' and enabled the option to let Windows search Windows Update. I was then asked to insert the original Nvidia CD, and after a while the wizard reported that nothing better could be found. Is that correct please? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

Windows Update is a particularly bad place to get drivers. Machines end up bricked when you do stuff like that. Getting them straight from Nvidia.com would be a prime choice. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us Paul |

Taking the last 5 digits of your driver version, that's forceware
169.21 which is the latest official Nvidia driver for XP. There are several beta drivers available at: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us They're newer but are beta versions. Try them if you like. Guru3d has an excellent forum where new driver performance is discussed. You may find it helpful: http://forums.guru3d.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21 Al On Thu, 08 May 2008 09:53:31 +0100, Terry Pinnell wrote: In Device Manager on this new XP Pro PC I see Driver Provider: NVIDIA Driver Date: 05/12/2007 Driver Version: 6.14.11.6921 That looks pretty recent, but just in case I chose 'Update Driver' and enabled the option to let Windows search Windows Update. Depending on what game you are running and which patch has been applied, there are a number of different beta drivers that address specific issues in those games. I currently run the 174.74 drivers on my 8800GT / Xp Pro system. Prior to this I was running the 169.44's. But unless you have a specific app that benefits, there's no real need to use any but the WHQL. |

Thanks all, appreciate the fast and helpful advice. I'll stay with the current driver then. Although I do a lot of image editing and DVD making and use graphics-intensive apps like Google Earth a lot, I'm not really into gaming. However, yesterday I installed a birthday present from my son, MS FSX, which I gather is amongst the most demanding. I'll get myself a joystick and will soon find out ;-) -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK |
