But most people don't consider 640x80 at 10fps to be 'running' a game.
I get peeved when I can't run comfortably at 2048x1536 with 4xAA with
everything maxed out, which the 7800GS will do with most games prior to
FEAR.

Bloody hell. How big is your VDU?

Not sure. Somewhere between 19 and 21 inches... I remember it was the
smallest one on the market at the time that supported 1920x1080 HD
resolution for video editing (letterboxed in 1920x1440).

I don't think the actual phosphor resolution is quite high enough to
display 2048 unique pixels across the screen (more like 1900 if I
remember correctly), but the difference between 1600x1200 and 2048x1536
modes is noticeable. Unfortunately the 7800GS has a tendency to crash
if I set it to 2048x1536 with max AA (8x?), which is what I had to do
to get the NOLF2 benchmark to stop telling me to increase the graphics
settings .

Actually that award goes to Gainward's 7800GS+.
24 pipelines, 512MB, overclockable to 500/1400
and beyond etc. The 7600GS would qualify as a
decent runner-up.

Obviously the 7800GS would be the perfect choice if it was
not for a problem...
The (big) problem with the 7800GS is costing 300 plus euro.
The 7600GS is half that price and I bet in some month it
will be near the 100 euro mark.
So bottom line I do prefer to recommend a piece of hardware
that costs 100 euro than 300 euro, simply cause I want the
PC gaming platform to be affordable, democratic and easy
accessible to all.

Is this a DirX 10 card? If not, why would we waste our money on an
overpriced soon to be obsolete card?

As far as I'm aware there are no DX10 cards today. In any case, why
would anyone in their right mind install Vista on an AGP machine?

So any card purchased today is a waste?

I don't look at it that way. By the time the new DX10 cards are out, any
card out now will be considered old by cutting edge standards. DX10 is not
going to be available until Vista ships. So until then there'll probably be
no DX10 cards on the market. And of course when they do come out you'll
probably be looking at $500 for a top end card. I think we have at lest 2
years before DX9 will be history. Hopefully. JLC

Like mmarker said there are no DX10 cards in the market and
lets not forget DX10 is not available yet and will not be
until next year.
So we need DX10 to be released... only next year... we need
hardware for DX10... only next year and then we need games
to be coded for DX10... only next year.
But even next year being the year of DX10 release I still
see it as mainly a DX9 dominated year... probably only in
late 2008 will see DX10 being seriously used in PC Games
and even so I do not believe it will be a requirement to
play those games and still DX9 will be supported.

So to reply to your question... 7600GS like all other GPUs
currently in the market will probably only be obsolete after
2009, so don't you feel its plenty of time to justify the
investment on a 7600GS? I do feel it totally justifies.

PS: Do you know more about X3 usage of STEAM in Retail?

Are you telling me a PC with 1GB of RAM, a 3.0GHz CPU, a 250GB
HDD, a 7600GS 256MB GPU will not be enough to run "Vista" with
quality including playing games? Do you need more?
And what percentage of PC Gamers do you think have better than
this?
So only cause the GPU is connected to a AGP 8x bus instead of
a PCI-E bus will you say its not suitable for "Vista"?
Are you telling me "Vista" requires a PCI-E bus?
So are you telling us someone with the above system should throw
away their PC out and buy a new one only cause it has a AGP bus?

If you have the money buy a 7800GS, but like I said not everyone
has 300 plus euro to spend on a GPU.

But please tell me any game currently available that only can runs
in 640x480 at 10fps when using a 7600GS?
There is NONE! ZERO! and you know it very well.
Ok I understand you are a high-end PC Gamer that likes to run
games at maximum detail but some cant afford it.
This (WRONG) notion that only with max detail and max resolution
can you enjoy PC Games is incorrect.
So please I understand you want and your choice is high-end HW
but that is not the ONLY choice for PC Gamers.
PC Gamers have lots of choices and everyone should be included.
Budget PC Gamers can play games and can use a 7600GS for it and
will certainly not have to run ANY GAME in 640x480 at 10fps.
I bet there is no game currently in the market that need to run
bellow 800x600 in a 7600GS.
Even the demanding Oblivion runs very well in a 7600GS so again
why are you giving wrong information
