Default Latest nVidia card that supports AGP 2x

Recall the discussions about Quadro4 and FX 5200.

What is the latest nVidia card that will support Dx9 and work
in AGP 2x slot? Thinking of going ebay hunting again. )

I dunno, probably a 6800 Ultra, which would still be futile and seemingly
far too modern for your retro tastes. It wouldn't make much difference what
anyone said since you seem to be missing the point that your old dual-Xeon
workstation thingy, which was cutting edge once upon a time, is now utterly,
hopelessly, totally outdated and completely defunct as a 3D gaming machine.
There is more to a 3D game engine than pixel pipelines and shaders and all
that business, there is a whole lot of other stuff going on that cannot EVER
be overcome with even the best graphics card money can buy. The CPU needs to
be *better*, it needs to access *better* memory in a *faster* way and that's
just for starters. You dual Xeon computer was state of the art once, like
the Atari 2600 was, once, but that does not mean you will be able to play
ultra-realistic flight sims with it.

All this time and effort and you're still trying to get blood out of a
stone. For pin money you could get an old base unit and plug your Quadro
into that and see some huge performance gains. Forget DX9 until you can stop
flogging this dead horse.

Regards,

Dr.White.

A 9800 Pro or XT, or a 6800 Ultra as mentioned will work. But a total waste
of money and effort for that dual PIII 500 Xeon box. It just won't produce
framerates in excess of what you have and FS2004 in DX9 mode will basically
do 3-5fps max. I've seen guys unloading Dell dual Xeon 2.6Ghz workstations
with 2 gigs of DDR for $300-350 on my local .forsale n/g. Ebay auction
270182746555 is just one of many....complete with XP Pro licence.

Well, all cards that use an ATI or Nvidia GPU with native AGP interface
work in AGP 2x slots (if the card maker provided the card's edge
connector with proper coding, though). Cards that are based on a GPU
with PCIe interface and which connect to AGP via a bridge chip don't.

Some Geforce 6800 series cards had native AGP interface, others used
PCIe. Or an ATI 9600/9700/9800/X800/X50 series card.

But to be clear: if you plan to use such card in your ancient Dell
500MHz XEON system then you're really only wasting money. The Quadro4 is
already made for P4 and XEON computers with 2GHz and more and
basically is twiddling it's thumbs because of boredom as your system
can't even feed this old card fast enough. A 6800 series card (or a
similar thing from ATI) will just draw more power but won't give you a
damn of a benefit.

Heck, with all the money you're sinking in your historic computer you
could have bought something faster from ebay (i.e. a HP x4000 Dual XEON
workstation which uses XEONs from 1.5 up to 3GHz).

Well, I'm of the opinion that if you're not interested then just ignore it.

However, it's getting really riddiculous. A chain is only as strong as
it's weakest part. Buying a Geforce 6 for a 500Mhz computer to run Ms
Flight Simulator on it is something what people probably would call
"stupid".

Yeah.. have looked into all that, but FSX requires a dual-core and other
high end hardware. Not much money has been spent playing with old
nVidia boards. Here's the lineup... which one should be installed in the
crappy ol' dual 500MHz machine?

* 32MB nVidia Riva TNT2 - Dell OEM - original

* 64MB nVidia Quadro4 - bought at `show´ for $25

* 128MB nVidia FX 5200 - bought on ebay for $12.51

So I spent a total of $37+ plus shipping and show admission fees.
Having fun with it and exploring ebay. )

Benjamin has already answered that question at great length. Read his
answers for Christs sakes.
