100Mbit network never transfers above 10Mbit??

I've got 2 computers (1 desktop and 1 laptop). The desktop has the nForce2
chipset (NIC) and the laptop has a Linksys 10/100 PC card in it. All drivers
for both systems are current. All my cables are CAT 5e. I've tried both
going through my gateway and running a direct crossover cable but no matter
what I do I can never transfer files faster then 10Mbit. I tried all the
device manager setting including the 'force 100Mbit', to no avail. The best
I can get is a steady 10Mbit (10%). I'm a computer technician by trade and
this one is stumping me big time...
Anyone else run into this?

You've probably already checked, but I'll mention the common things
first anyway, since they're easy.

Are any adapters' 100Mb LED, lit?
Any chance the cable is traveling past some really bad EMI,
transformer or monitor, microwave, or... ?

Check both NIC jacks, to be sure the contact points are clean and
unbent... same goes for the cables.

Is this the first install of the drivers, the network properites are
unchanged, or might it be of benefit to delete all and let windows PNP
everything again?

Failing the above suggestions I'd probably just find or "whip up" a
3rd PC, trying to determine, isolate whether one or the other is
dictating 10Mb mode.

Set your NIC's on the laptop and PC to autodetect the speed.

Then check your hub/swich and make sure you're on a 100mbit switch.

Self made or store bought cables? If you made them, did you follow
suggested color codes or just wire straight through? Improperly wired
cables will introduce enough cross talk to prevent full speed operation.

Other things to check
CPU usage. If it is high, then you may have a driver problem.
Hard disk speed. If one of your Hard disks is in PIO mode, you will be
limited by the speed of the hard disks.
Network errors: If you get a lot of errors for some reason, the system will
not transfer at full speed. Look at output of netstat.

There are some utilities that will benchmark the network without
transferring files. Try one of those to see if there is a difference.
