Nvidia ti4600 Cooling Fan Issue
I have been reviewing past posts regarding video problems and have
come to the conclusion that my card is overheating. Here are the details: Dell 8200 - 4 years old Nvidia ti4600 OEM Symptoms: First noticed on Midtown Maddness while being played by grandkids. Game would freeze and then very slowly respond to keystrokes. Only way out was manual shutdown and restart. Opened PC and observed fan on Nvidia wasn't spinning. Cleaned dust etc and seemed to work OK. Recently similar symptoms returned. When I shut down the PC for an hour or so and restart the game works fine for about 10 minutes then problem recurs. I have also confirmed with Allied Assault game. My conclusions: Nvidia card is overheating and hanging when used in 3d for games. Card may not be fried since works on cold startup. My options: Install a new cooler on the old card or buy a used card on EBay. My question to this group: Does this make sense and which option would make sense to you? Cheers, Bojangles |

Cheers, Bojangles It looks like the chip on the TI4600, has a heat spreader on the top, which reduces the risk of damaging it if you fit a separate cooler. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...evga-acs3.html The TI4600 is mentioned as being compatible he http://www.zalman.co.kr/product/cool...elist_eng.html I don't know if those RAM sinks are absolutely necessary. If there is some air movement from the new fan, onto the memory chips, chances are that is enough. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc... 00&x=17&y=25 I would apply a little thermal paste, between the new cooler and the chip. A used card may already have a fan problem (like if the previous owner puts a drop of oil on it, before sending it to you). It might only be days before you have another fan problem. Fans can be oiled, but you would have to do that with some regularity. Paul |

Cheers, Bojangles I had a old and still running ti4600 in one of my old computers start doing the same thing I cleaned out the fan with compressed air and it helped but after a wile it started again so I removed the fan and heat sink and took fan off and cleaned it with Windex and cleaned the heat sink and gpu and reinstalled with arctic silver 5 and it runs like a champ now should last a lot longer now Give that a try first |

It's been a permanent fix every time for me. I've also used Mobile 28 synth. grease, but you've got to make sure the fan starts up the first time (or manually help it start) then let it run-in for awhile. -Doug |
