Default No fix for hardrive Index corruption (NTFS)

hi,

i am running win2k and have a 40gb hardrive with a error in the NTFS
Index (error in Index $130 for file 9272)

when windows boots up, chkdsk starts and scans the drive, it finds the
problem, says it's fixing it but then hangs there for longer than is
normal.

i've also tried using Ontrack Fix-it utility, which again finds the
error, fixes it, but the problem is still there, which chkdsk then
reports when rebooting.

also running Fix-It again, it still reports the error it said it had
fixed.

I know formatting would solve the problem, but it really isn't an
option as i have no way of baking up 30gb+ of data.

Anyone know how i can fix this problem any other way?

Regards,

Sean

I guess you'd need a pretty HUGE oven to bake up 30GB of data! ;-)

If the data on that drive is that important, it might be easiest to just get
another HD and reinstall Windows onto that drive and copy over whatever you
can, then format the original drive and use it as a backup for the stuff you
want to keep.

Or, if you can boot into Windows (by bypassing chkdsk) - get a cd burner
(probably cheaper than a HD) and back up the stuff you need onto CD-r. This
would take a lot longer than adding a new HD, though.

Nah, my toaster oven fits 9 drives pretty easy.

It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral
busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his
cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our
own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval
of their consciences. -- C. S. Lewis

how's the physical condition of the drive? i'd run the hdd manufacturer
diagnostic to see if you're not dealing with 'hard' damage.

good idea, i'll try that now.
