Crazy hardware upgrade?
Finally went ahead and bought a new video card, a 128MB GeForce fx 5200 AGP http://i10.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/b9/b4/a495_1.JPG for $12.52 to replace the Viper 770. Might add more RAM with the intension of running FS2004. Did a lot of homework and group discussion before proceeding. Does any of this make sense? or should it be nominated for the most foolhardy FS stunt of year? -G |

Besides, for $12.52 you really cant go wrong. Matt |

from your previous posts it should do you, i understand that your not expecting much from it, just more detail from increased memory, and maybe another couple of fps. maybe start saving up to get a whole new pc? Yeah exactly.. I just don't what to give up this Dell workstation yet. Have always bought expensive hardware and kept it a long time. For example, I've only had three PCs since the days of Win 3.0. A Gateway 486 for Win3.11 (obsolete), A mixed SCSI/IDE P5-120 for Win NT4 (still running Win2k with 180MHz Pentium overdrive, 2x 40GB drive array and all the great games of the era including Links386 golf), and the Precision 610 all SCSI dual Xeon. Thanks for that.. I'm aware of the tradeoff and have target FPS usually set in the range of 17 to 21. Not expecting 60 fps here!! ) Do you feel that speed, i.e. CPU clock and bus speeds have the biggest impact? And the amount of RAM is important for an expanded `scenery´ footprint? Considering an increase from 512MB to 1GB of ECC to go along with the 128MB video card. Buds in the flightsim forum say that the fx 5200 sux, that it was the slowest damn thing.. but Benjamin was most helpful in spec'ing it out. -G |
