Resolution Problems
Hi all,
I have an older pc in my bedroom. Use it mostly for browsing the internet. It had a ATI 9600 Pro video card which died. I picked up an Nvidia GeForce FX5200 for pretty cheap (since I only need 2D graphics). I tossed it into the machine and it works at every resolution except the one I want. (1680x1050) When I set it to 1680x1050 (this is the native resolution of the monitor) it definately doesn't look like 1680x1050 and to confirm the monitor shows the resolution as 1280x1024. The computer and the NVidia control panel thinks that it is 1680x1050 but in reality it is not.I temporarily I set it to 1440x900 which works fine but it isn't super clear since the monitor is an LCD at 1680x1050. I really am not sure where to look for this. Wasn't really sure how to easily describe the problem so that I can perform a search. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? |

There is some kind of problem with the DVI output, and the driver may be taking that into account. Some more searching may turn up evidence one way or another. http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=19854 In this thread, the maximum pixel clock is listed as 135MHz. In the second link, 165MHz is the full rate according to the spec. The pixel clock affects the resolution and refresh rate options. http://linux.derkeiler.com/Newsgroup.../msg00018.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvi The search terms I tried a fx5200 dvi resolution Good luck, Paul |

I tried to go through the steps outlined in the first link but I had no monitor driver. I tried to find a driver for my monitor but could not find one. (Westinghouse LCM-22W3) I wasn't sure that I needed one because the plug and play monitor selection was fine with my previous card. (ATI 9600Pro) I threw that one back in to my pc and it works at 1680x1050 just fine. (For a little while but then starts to corrupt the display) Thanks. |

I don't think Westinghouse provide a monitor driver. You can test the Plug and Play info (EDID via DDC/CI serial link on the monitor cable) with this program. http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm The photo on that web page, shows some info being returned by the monitor. That should be announcing the max resolution, and also the brand and model number. I'd play around with the FX5200's I have here, but I don't have anything with a DVI connector. My current monitor is VGA only. Paul |

first did you unistall the ati drivers
second you may want to try changing the mhz setting if you can. most of the hdtv/monitors I have seen run at 60mhz but you could try 70 or 72mhz. My pansonic will only run at 60mhz by 1024x768. wrote in message ... Hi all, I have an older pc in my bedroom. Use it mostly for browsing the internet. It had a ATI 9600 Pro video card which died. ... my pc and it works at 1680x1050 just fine. (For a little while but then starts to corrupt the display) Is the fan on the card spinning? Perhaps that is broken (there are other causes for the card to start behaving badly after a while but this is a common cause as well), it would not be expensive to repair it and that card is better than an FX5200. Can't help You with the resolution problem itself. Good luck. Yours sincerely, Rene |

I swapped the heatsonk and fan from the FX5200 to the ATI and it worked fine for a while. (About 20 mins). Usually the corruption problem manifests itself within 1 minute. So I was all exited. I then had to boot the machine for something and when it came back so did the corruption. I couldn't get it to stop after that. Thanks |

My current monitor is VGA only. * * Paul I had an idea this morning. I had an older version of powerstrip that I had bought (for my HTPC) and no longer use. I fired it up with the ATI card. I went into the timings page and did a print screen of the timings. (weird that later when I brought up this pic it had the corruption showing on the picture as well) I put the FX5200 back in and proceeded to set up a custom resolution with those timings. I added the new resolution and it tested out....VOILA 1680x1050. Powerstrip then wanted to reboot. Upon starting back up same problem 1280x1024. I went in to powerstrip to set the same timings back up and no luck. When it tests I either get a blank screen or Out of range message. My wife thinks I am nuts because we hardly ever use this pc. It works fine with a VGA cable at 1680x1050. But I know that it is going digital-analog-digital and it burns me up. :-) Thanks for all of your help. |

That older underpowered video card is apparently NOT powerful enough to
drive a high resolution 1680 x 1050 display. Time for an upgrade of video card. -- --DaveW wrote in message ... Hi all, I have an older pc in my bedroom. Use it mostly for browsing the internet.
