Performance is ok, but I know i can do better without dropping too
much cash. I am curious to know if a single 9600 GT 512MB (perhaps
slightly overclocked) would be overall better/faster than my current
setup?

I'd like to trade up to 9600 dual SLI but can likely only afford one
of them for now, but if my performance would be worse with just one
then I need to wait until i can afford two at the same time.

I had a 7950GX2 which is two 7900GTX sandwiched together (same as SLI
but only uses one PCI-E slot). Even my 8800GT is faster than the 7950GX2
so of course the 9800 would be too. SLI is a waste of money IMO because
the hardware improves quite fast. SLI comes with it's own configuration
quirks too and is not worth the hassle. I never bought the 7950GX2 and
EVGA sent it to me as an RMA without even considering if it was fully
compatible with my mb or would fit in my case. It wasn't fully
compatible with my mb and caused quirks that I didn't want to deal with
so soon dumped it for the superior 8800GT. Thanks a lot EVGA!

If you're really wanting to spend some money for gaming, why don't you buy
one 8800gtx 512mg overclocked. The other cards mentioned aren't going to
touch that.

Were a 512 MByte 8800 GTX to actually exist, it still wouldn't be a good
choice at this date.
