problem with ATI Radeon 9800 Pro - please help

your Radeon 9800 video card
Please refer to the "Getting Started Guide" for
proper hardware installation !!!"

After removing the video card, cleaning and reinserting,
the message (above) went away. But, I noticed that
the fan on the video card was not spinning. So,
my guess is that the video card is overheating.
Hopefully, this can be fixed somehow. Any ideas?

Also, I now get the following "warning" message ...

"The ATI Control Panel failed to initialize because
no ATI driver is installed, or ATI driver is not working properly.
The ATI Control Panel will now exit."

And, the only display setting that works is 640 x 480
It will not take any other resolution.

I use 3 X 9800 Pro and 1 x 9800XT video cards with no problems. All
computers are running XP Pro.
I have had no problems with the stock coolers on these cards although I have
read where it might be better to fit bigger aftermarket coolers. As I type
this my 9800XT is running at 35 degrees C. (Everest) so I have left the
stock cooler alone untill such times as I need to replace a fan.
I did have trouble once with the molex connector on one of the cards. I
guess I must not have pressed the PSU connector in hard enough and that
caused a bad connection to the card blackening one of the pins. I cleaned
the pin and socket and all is well again. the problems I was having at that
time sounded like the problems you are having.
You could also try getting a friend to run your card in his computer just to
see how it goes.

I'll have to double check the power (molex?) connector on
the card again. Might be hard to find another system with
an AGP slot since AGP has pretty much been replaced.
But, I'll keep it in mind.

Sounds like the card went bad. However, it can't hurt to uninstall,
then install the latest drivers for the card (if it lets you get that
far).

chip?

As Ron mentioned, yes there is a fan mounted on a PCI slot so you blow
cool air on the card. For now, leave the side off the computer and get
a small (or large) fan blowing cool air into the computer. That will
help determine if it's heat related alone, and not a card failure also.

And, I can either send it back to the seller or ATI.

It took me about 3 weeks to get it to ATI and back. They changed their
shipping address and never bothered to change the info on their online RMA
info. So UPS had to take an extra 5 days to forward it from one address in New
York all the way up to some drop ship place in Niagra Falls area. Then 3 weeks
later i get a replacement card, not the same one but same model shipped from
some warehouse in texas.

Still happy since this was and extra AGP card for use in a beater gaming
system for the kids but the card that was sent back looks in fine, new, clean
condition

I haven't had a cover on my system for a long time.
I don't have any (big / small) fans around. So,
I used Dust Off to blow cool air directly on the chip.
It helped but only briefly. The system is currently off.
I will let it cool before powering it up again.
It might work for a minute.

You did conect the cable from the power supply disnt you? I cant remember if
you said you did.

Most likely the fan on the card has failed. If the card was not covered
by warranty I'd say take it off and clean and lube it with Inox. But just
send it in.

I found a place (not online) that has the PCI VGA coolers in stock.
Since I'm paranoid about sending the video card away and
not getting it back, I decided to try-out some work-arounds and
maybe learn some things.


Dont be paranoid, if its under warranty by all means get that thing replaced.
If you even so much as remove that stock fan you will void your warranty. that
card has a 3 year warranty. If its a built by ATI card, you will get it back.

Well, I finally powered up the system. As expected,
it worked fine for a few minutes. I was even able to
set the resolution back to the way it was, nice and high.
So now, I strongly believe that the problem is due to
insufficient cooling. If I send the video card back to ATI,
they'll likely replace the fan, which might go bad in
another 6-8 months and I'm back to square one.
Hmmm ... what to do ... can't wait to get my hands on
that PCI VGA cooler now.


They wont replace the fan, they will replace the entire card.

When you do the rma, only send the card, no cables etc....

Those little card slot coolers will not solve the issue.
