Default mpeg2 playback problems

I have an AIW 8500 with Catalyst 3.4, MMC 7.7 and DVD 7.6
I can capture DVD quality mpeg2's with no frames lost from the ATI TV or
analogue source (composite) but have difficulty playing them back.
ATI's File Player, Pinnacle Studio 8, and Adobe Prem 6 play them back extremely
choppy. Makes it almost impossible to author these files.
OTOH, Windows Media Player7 and Sonics MyDVD play them back flawlessly.
(I also captured and encoded with VirtualDub and TMPGenc with the same playback
problems).
AVI and meg1 files play back fine in all.

Any ideas where the problem might lie?

System -
Win98SE, 1.3GHz, 512MB, AIW 8500, 80GB ATA 100 and 20GB ATA66 hard-drive, DX8.1
