quick questions regarding Athlon XP
Which of these are the best for a Athlon XP 2600+ then?

If so, will I get any included with the Cooler Master fan & heatsink kit? 3) Will the processor fit fine into this motherboard: Gigabyte SoA VIA KT400 ATX A TIA! Reread the description of that 'sink on the link you gave, it's not appropriate for an XP2600, and it's not very good even for an XP2100... Coolermaster rates their products generously, sometimes seemingly arbitrarily, and you need be more critical of the construction of the 'sink in question. In general it's highly recommended to use a 'sink with a copper-based plate or entirely copper construction on any Thoroughbred Athlon XP, including the XP2600. I suggest something more like this (fan sold separately): http://store.yahoo.com/svcompucycle/thersk7socco.html Dave |

I think i'm gonna take the easy option and buy:
Athlon XP 2600+ 2.08Ghz SoA Box - 333FSB since it includes the heatsink & fan. "kony" wrote in message ... As long as it's a Cooler Master 'retail', you'll be fine. Their retail
sinks are badass. Just make sure it's not OEM. Their OEM sinks leave a bit to be desired. If it's retail, you won't even need the thermal grease, trust me. - fred.do stood up, at show-n-tell, and said: I intend to buy: Athlon XP 2600+ 2.08Ghz SoA - 333FSB & Cooler Master SoA XP 2600+ (http://www.coolermaster.com/products...dp5-6j31c.html) 1) What does the 'SoA' in the title of the processor mean? 2) Would I need any thermal paste? I reckon that SoA could just mean the retail version that comes with a
really crap heatsink/fan. I'm using a Coolermaster Globalwin (about £11 from ebuyer and similar to that volcano 11 i.e. manual speed control). It keeps the temp on my XP2100 in the 40s even without thermal grease. I'm trying to build a silent(ish) PC, so I've just paid £15 for an Arctic cooler. What a waste of money! the reason they're 'silent' is cause your PC wont last more than 5 minutes with one! It worked OK with an old XP1500 (I put the 50 degrees down to the hot weather), but when I put in my XP2100 (a t'bred, too) the machine would freak out and shut down after a minute!. Even going in to the BIOS I could see the temp climbing to 60 degrees within a minute. I guess this NEEDS grease, but it'll still be no better (at best) than my globalwin WITHOUT grease- just quieter. Just think what an AMD stock fan or cheap collermaster will do to your XP2600! BTW I heard volcanos are particularly LOUD! "fred.do" wrote in message ... t... Why don't you use grease? Hell, even a tiny amt of plain old ' white' grease is better than non.(unless the mating surfaces are perfectly matched). I never needed any with my old overclocked P3 and Golden Orb (remember them?) and when I upgraded, I read this scare story about some guy frying his chip by being a bit over generous with the grease. My globalwin works great without the stuff so it's obviously a pretty good match. The arctic cooler has a really rough surface, but I reckon putting grease on just to get it as good as my globalwin WITHOUT grease doesn't say much about the former, does it? "Li'l ol' me" SNIP, .
